Dogwood Ceramic Supply Announcement

May 09, 2008

Spectrum's recent announcement concerning the conversion of the 2oz squeeze bottles into the 2 ounce soft-sided Pen package has caused Dogwood Ceramic Supply to remodel our showroom display of high fire Spectrum products.  The GOOD NEWS is the remodeling has been completed.

The products in the display rack in the center foreground are the Spectrum 1100 Cone 4-6 Glazes including pints and gallons.  Part of the showroom display of Spectrum Nova Glazes and Raku Glazes are visible in the background.  The Spectrum 400 Series in 2oz and 8oz bottles are visible in the left background display rack.  Not visible in this picture are the Spectrum 500 Series and 600 Series Underglazes, Spectrum Raised Accent Colors and Spectrum Glaze Crystals.  The Spectrum 900 Series Low Stone Glazes are displayed near the Duncan products in the showroom to keep all the low-fire products in one section.

Dogwood Ceramic Supply will adjust our Duncan Discount Schedule effective June 1, 2008.  The Duncan Discount Schedule is based upon dollar quantity purchased specifically so that small changes in the schedule can be easily accomplished.   Duncan's price averaging of their major product lines in October 2008 included a small increase in the average price.  On June 1 2008, Duncan is completing the changes to their price lists by price averaging the minor product lines that were not adjusted back in October.  In addition there will be an adjustment in the price of leaded glazes at the same time.  Dogwood Ceramic Supply is choosing this time to adjust our discount schedule due to the various Duncan price adjustments as well as changes in our operating costs.

May 08, 2008

Dogwood Ceramic Supply has updated our Freight Rate Table to May 2008 rates.  The Freight Rate Table was prepared so that customers can properly evaluate freight rates.  The table was computed for most major cities and geographic regions across the Southern USA based upon May 2008 freight rates computed at 500, 1000 and 2000 lb shipping weights for Moist Clay (Freight Class 50) including an allowance for the fuel surcharge based upon current fuel surcharges.  For quick comparison purposes Dogwood Ceramic Supply can ship 2000 lbs of clay to most schools and commercial locations in Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama for less than $130 with many locations only $110.

Dogwood Ceramic Supply Announcement

April 05, 2008

Clay Prices

Effective January 2006, Dogwood Ceramic Supply will make quarterly adjustments on the price of all slips and clays, should the need arise.  The prices posted on the web pages and in the showroom for each specific product will be updated as needed at the beginning of each quarter.  No additional announcement will be made.  These quarterly adjustments will avoid the large annual increases that were common in the past.
Rising fuel prices have made it necessary to make an adjustment in the price of slips and clays.  If fuel prices miraculously go down then Dogwood Ceramic Supply will lower our slip and clay prices appropriately. Mackie Slip's annual price adjustment was within the past 60 days, at which time Dogwood's selling price was adjusted for current fuel prices.  Standard's clays and all Seeley's products are being adjusted at this time.  There is no need to adjust the price of Standard's White Stoneware Slip at this time.

Please note:  When comparing slip and clay prices always evaluate the LANDED cost of the product.  What is the LANDED cost?  Landed cost is the cost of the product PLUS all freight, fuel surcharges and handling costs.  The landed cost is extremely important as there are vendors who intentionally list a low selling price only to add outrageous shipping and handling fees.  Check Dogwood Ceramic Supply's Freight Rate Table to properly evaluate freight rates.  The rates on the table including prepaid freight fees as well as an allowance for the fuel surcharge at current rates.  For quick comparison purposes Dogwood Ceramic Supply can ship 2000 lbs of clay to most schools and commercial locations in Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama for less than $125 with many locations only $105.
Even clay buyers outside of the Southern USA can use Dogwood's Freight Rate Table to evaluate their local freight charges.  It stands to reason that if Dogwood can ship 2000 lbs of clay a distance of 250 miles for $105 that clay suppliers in other parts of the country should be able to do so as well.

Mackie's

The Mackie's Slip annual price increase effective February 1, 2008 was approximately 4%.  Dogwood Ceramic Supply will adjust our selling price of Mackie's Slip including inbound freight costs and our operational costs for the product effective March 1, 2008.

Orton

Orton's annual price increase is effective March 01, 2008.  SRB and BRB Firing Cones will increase approximately 8%, SSB Witness Cones will increase approximately 4%.  There is no price adjustment on the Orton VentMaster for 2008.

Spectrum

January 21, 2008

The Spectrum 2008 S.R. Price List has been released.  Important notes from the Spectrum Newsletter:

"We have done our best to keep prices reasonable, and in fact have absorbed any increase in costs related to the changes in exchange rates this year due to the somewhat volatile US economy.  The only price changes we've passed along are those related specifically to increased raw material costs.

Specifically, you will find an increase in the price of blue and black products as per the rise in the cost of cobalt.

More dramatically, you will notice that 3 of our Low Stone Glazes (914, 915, 918) have had significant increases.  These are due to the increase of the cost of Nickel Oxide.  We are currently working to reformulate the glazes without the nickel in order to bring the cost back down.

Lastly, please don't forget the impending end to our lead glazes.  While those surfaces have some allure, it really is in the best interest of the consumer to get the lead out.  It is just too hard to guarantee that traces of it don't find their way where they don't belong; and soon enough, it'll be legislation that keeps those products out of your showrooms.  In the short term, feel free to get a quote on those products  and we will fill orders.  I do suggest that if you are concerned, however, that you do stock up as the end for these products is near."

Dogwood Comment:
The price list is dated March 15, 2008.  Dogwood Ceramic Supply will implement the new prices effective March 31, 2008.

SPECTRUM Newsletter

WE ARE GOING 100%        LEAD-FREE

"You have all, no doubt, seen the huge media coverage of lead paints on toys, etc. This has resulted in a bill before the US Congress calling for a reduction in the total lead content to 40 ppm of products sold to children (i.e. schools). In as much as our major ingredient, frit, comes in at 20 to 100 ppm, this will be a very difficult target to achieve.
To give ourselves the best possible chance of reaching this goal we have decided to eliminate all possible sources of lead contamination in our production processes which means stopping the production of all lead-based glazes. This will affect our Raku line most with the reformulation of 4 colors. It will also eliminate 2 low-fire metallics (144 & 145) and 2 high-fire metallics (1189 &1190). We are also working on an inexpensive, easy-to-use clear glaze to replace the lead-based 100 Clear

ALL 2 OZ. SIZES WILL SWITCH TO THE “PEN” PACKAGE

Effective immediately all of our products that used to be packaged in 2 ounce squeeze bottles will now be put into the 2 ounce soft-sided Pen package that we use for our SuperWriters, RAC Pens and Multipens. This will include the entire 400 series plus the 500 and 600 series. However, conversion of the 600 series will be delayed a few months.
We have made this change because of the great response we have had to this pen. It is very easy to use and works beautifully for decorating even without a metal tip. It also has a much more effective seal than the 2 oz cylinders which have been prone to drying out. Although the pen is somewhat more expensive the added customer appeal and functionality make it well worth the added cost.

Special Announcement- Discontinuation of Talc Production

R T Vanderbilt has announced that they will stop the production of NYTAL and CERAMITALC effective the end of 2008.  NYTAL and CERAMITALC are key components in the manufacturing of low fire ceramic slips and white clays.
Alternative products from competing mines are readily available, but product and shipping costs of these other products may result in significant increases in the cost of some low fire ceramic slips and white clays at some point during 2008.

Hurricane Katrina

While we remember the past through pictures and memorials, we must also move forward.  The Mississippi Gulf Coast is rebuilding and hopefully even growing larger and stronger.  New restaurants are opening almost daily, shopping malls are being planned and new apartment and home starts are leading the nation.  On the clay side of the world Dogwood Ceramic Supply is expanding our products and services and there are a number of pottery and ceramic studios that are opening along the Gulf Coast.  Maybe there really is a silver lining in every dark cloud.

Information about Hurricane Katrina including One School at a Time along with pictures taken by our webmaster and many of our ceramic and pottery friends can be found on Dogwood Ceramic Supply's Hurricane Katrina website page.
