One School at a Time

Background:

As the staff and management of Dogwood Ceramic Supply visited the various communities across the Gulf Coast, it became apparent that a great deal of rebuilding would be required.  Everybody felt the need to do something positive, but what could we do?  The ceramic and pottery industry is relatively small, what impact could we have that would really benefit the Gulf Coast?

When we visited the St. Martin Community to check on the status of a favorite restaurant, we discovered the St. Martin Middle School.  We had heard that the storm surge had gutted the school, but until you see it in person, it is hard to fathom.   We thought about the children that enjoyed Mr. Carroll's clay art program, and realized that the art program was funded by the efforts of Mr. Carroll, the PTA of St. Martin Middle School, and the children of the community.  Where would the money come from to rebuild this program?

The nucleus of the One School at a Time program was born from that very question.

Program:

There are many clay art programs in South Louisiana and Mississippi that existed prior to Hurricane Katrina which were significantly damaged or destroyed.  Dogwood Ceramic Supply and the ceramic and pottery industry can not afford to rebuild every program, but we can rebuild One School at a Time.  Dogwood Ceramic Supply and our participating manufacturers, will donate equipment and supplies to One School at a Time  through the end of 2005.  Schools and programs will be chosen based upon need.  The emphasis will be K-8 clay art programs.  The K-8 clay programs, because they are not academically required, are often funded through PTA, student or community donations.

Primary funding for One School at a Time  will be based upon Dogwood Ceramic Supply's total sales of select manufacturer's products through the end of 2005.    Simply stated, the more products sold by Dogwood Ceramic Supply, the greater the donations to One School at a Time.

In addition to Dogwood Ceramic Supply's generous donation to the One School at a Time program, many manufacturers are also providing special assistance and fund raising activities to directly support the schools and programs of South Mississippi and Louisiana.  Manufacturer fund raising activities may continue through 2006.
