Ceramic Bisque FAQ

Ceramic Bisque generally refers to clay being fired the first time to a high temperature at or near the maturity point of the clay.  For hobby ceramics, the earthenware slip or moist clay will be fired to Cone 04.  Cone 04 is approximately 1920˚F (depending upon the rate of climb during the last 1 to 2 hours of firing).  Firing hotter than Cone 04 (such as Cone 03 or Cone 02) does not increase the strength of the clay and can cause serious technical issues with the decorative glazes or underglazes that may be subsequently applied to the wares.

Please note, Ceramic Bisque firing temperatures vary according to the type of clay and usage.  The Old English term for Ceramic Bisque is Biscuit or Ceramic Biscuit.

    Sources of Ceramic Bisque:

Ceramic Bisque can be found in the typical Mom & Pop Ceramic Studio across the USA.  The variety of bisque from the Mom and Pop sources tend to be the greatest.  Dogwood Ceramic Supply's Premium Ceramic Bisque is a good example of the classic Ceramic Studio bisque... a huge variety ALWAYS on display for immediate purchase and of course the fewest number of castings on the molds to preserve product quality.

Import sources are of Ceramic Bisque are quite common.  Yes, Everybody's Favorite 4th World Country is the primary source of the imported bisque.  Other major sources include Italy, Spain and Thailand.  The variety tends to be limited, actually pretty darn limited compared to the selection cast in-house by the typical ceramic studio. And the quality of the imported bisque can hit or miss at best, especially as vendors chase price versus quality.   But, surprisingly, Everybody's Favorite 4th World Country's Ceramic Bisque is generally better quality than the European sources.  In spite of the disadvantages and limited selection, the ceramic bisque from imported sources will always remain popular because of the low prices.  Specifically because of the low prices (and even lower profit margins), Dogwood Ceramic Supply's inventory depth of imported bisque will always remain quite low as we are unwilling to play the game of follow the leader to poverty.

Domestically there are a very limited number of production studios producing bulk qualities of Ceramic Bisque.  American Quality Ceramic Bisque is from one such source.  AQ Ceramic Bisque is manufactured by a manufacturer with a proven track record of producing 1,000's or even 10,000's of identical pieces in less than 1 month.  The prices will never beat the imports, but the quality is always better than the imports and of course the variety is potentially unlimited.

Dogwood Ceramic Supply Premium Ceramic Bisque History:

Prior to Hurricane Katrina, Dogwood Ceramic Supply had produced a limited quantity of Dogwood Premium Ceramic Bisque for the enjoyment of our local and regional customers who could not clean greenware or were unwilling to wait for the greenware to be fired fired.  With many customers loosing their personal kiln or access to a kiln with the closing of many large storefront and small neighborhood studios across the region following Hurricane Katrina there was a need to change our mix of ceramic bisque versus greenware.

In early 2006, Dogwood Ceramic Supply made the decision to eliminate greenware from our shelves and make the switch completely to Dogwood Premium Ceramic Bisque in the showroom.  While part of the decision process was the damage rate to our greenware shelves from the influx of new customers, the major issue was the percentage of greenware items we were cleaning on a special request basis.  It was readily apparent from customer demand that switching from a greenware emphasis to bisque emphasis was the right thing to do.

The complete switch from greenware to Dogwood Premium Ceramic Bisque was completed in mid-2009.  Yes, it really required 3 years of time to convert (clean and fire) all of the greenware in our showroom into Ceramic Bisque.  The amount of time it took to process our greenware shelves into bisque is a good reflection on the breath and depth of products on our shelves as well as the amount of time our staff takes to clean each piece.

Today, the Dogwood Premium Ceramic Bisque is the primary product in the Dogwood Showroom.  Greenware is still offered, but Greenware has become a special order item rather than the a primary item and as such is not stocked on the shelves because a small amount of greenware scattered throughout shelves of bisque would be confusing to customers and would result in significant damage risk to the raw greenware items on the shelf.
