Duncan Renaissance Glazes

Duncan Renaissance Glazes were specifically designed for Cone 4-6 firing in oxidation (electric kiln) and are considered a reactive glaze as the glaze will move and break in the firing yielding multiple tones of varying and contrasting colors. Different results can be obtained from the Duncan Renaissance Glazes depending upon application thickness, firing temperature and hold time, clay type or color, depth of any details as well as the shape of the piece. The entire line of 16 colors of Duncan Renaissance Glazes are nontoxic, food-safe and perfect for the classroom or studio.

Duncan's Renaissance Glazes are packaged in easy to handle wide-mouth 8oz bottles (half pints) which are perfect for children's small hands in the classroom while still being large enough in volume to satisfy adult sized decorating appetites. Duncan's Renaissance Glazes are not packaged in the popular gallon sizes at this time.

Duncan's Renaissance Glazes are HIGH FIRE glazes. Cone 4 to 6. The Renaissance Glazes are NOT glazes for LOW FIRE application like the many other glazes in the Duncan product line. If you are looking for a low fire reactive glaze, Duncan produces Designer Glazes and Courtyard Glazes to meet your needs. |
The Duncan Renaissance Glaze color sample
shown near the top of this page is RG-705 Bronze Patina. The displayed tile is
actually a simple 1" deeply detailed tile that was photographed with a macro
lens to show the colorful, reactive details of the Duncan Renaissance Glaze when
heavily applied to a deeply detailed tile of white clay. The Duncan Renaissance
Glazes, when properly fired to Cone 4-6, will react to the shape of the item,
the depth and sharpness of the details as well as the application thickness in
addition to firing temperature and hold times. Like all reactive glazes, the
Duncan Renaissance Glazes produce better results when the glaze is applied
unevenly, thus the Renaissance Glazes are only available in brushing formula. Each color chip of the Renaissance Glazes shown above are also available as a
full size color chip by simply clicking on the color chip. For best results the
Duncan Renaissance Glazes should be fired to Cone 5 or Cone 6 with a generous
hold time (up to 20 minutes) for the best appearance (meaning color development,
glaze flow and color breaks).
Please remember the Duncan Renaissance Glazes are to be fired to Cone 4-6. The
Renaissance Glazes are only to be used with
high fire slips and
moist clay and
can NOT be used with low fire ceramic bisque or tile.
Do not apply the Duncan Renaissance Glazes to near the bottom of the
wares as these glazes will RUN as much or more than Spectrum's reactive glazes.
Please visit Have You Heard My Coat Story for additional assistance with glaze
application issues.
If you like the look and reactions of the Duncan Renaissance Glazes, we suggest
you click over to the Spectrum Glazes to view both low fire and high fire
alternatives to the Duncan Renaissance Glazes. The
Spectrum Glazes, unlike the
Duncan Renaissance Glazes, are available in gallon sizes suitable for the large
classroom or studio.
Warning: Dogwood Ceramic Supply is using the digital chips of the Renaissance
Glazes provided by Duncan. In Duncan's process of photographing and converting
the digital files to print media and then back to display media, a color
correction issue transpired. This issue is most readily apparent with RG-710
Buff Clay. In simple terms the actual color chip is NOT as yellow as the digital
chip shown above. Dogwood Ceramic Supply has unsuccessfully attempted to modify
the RG-710 and other digital color chips provided by Duncan to match the actual
color chips on display in our showroom. However, since the Duncan Renaissance
Glazes are reactive glazes, the actual color achieved may not be critical to
most customers. That said, if you must match a specific project, we
strongly suggest you visit the Dogwood Ceramic Supply showroom to view the
actual color chips.
Historically Duncan has been dedicated to producing the finest
low fire glazes. From time to time Duncan has expanded their product offering to include a series
of High Fire Glazes, such as the recently introduced Duncan Renaissance Glazes.
Looking back over Duncan's history, in the very early 90's (1991 to be exact if
our records are correct), Duncan introduced a line of high fire glazes... the HF
glaze line.... to compliment their recently introduced stoneware slip. The costs
associated with shipping large volumes of slip cross country soon became
prohibitive and the stoneware slip as well as the HF glazes were discontinued.
About 10 years later Duncan reintroduced the same HF glaze line to the market.
While the glazes were a huge success for Dogwood Ceramic Supply (in fact
customers are still looking for the glazes today), the color palette was a bit
dated and the limited glaze line (less than 1 dozen colors) did not stand much
of a chance for broad appeal. In 2004 Duncan officially discontinued their HF
glaze line (for the 2nd time) and Dogwood Ceramic Supply purchased the remaining
inventory of the Duncan HF Glazes from the factory. It was this massive 2004
glaze purchase by Dogwood Ceramic Supply that initiated the now defunct House
Cleaning Sale.
Today (2010), Duncan is back with another High Fire glaze line... the Duncan
Renaissance Glazes. The color palette has been updated and there is a broader
range of color choices. Win-win for everybody.
