(Underglaze for Bisque)

    The 87 colors in the Duncan Concepts Underglaze for Bisque product line are highly versatile underglazes designed for a wide variety techniques including majolica, decorative brushwork as well as broad coverage like a traditional glaze. The Duncan Concepts product line consists of 71 colors in the primary series, 9 earth-tone colors and 7 neon colors. The bright, vivid Duncan Concepts Neon colors are ideal for children's projects.

    From a color wheel perspective, the Duncan Concepts are an exceptionally product with a greater flexibility than competing underglaze for bisque product lines. The Duncan Concepts were conceived by Duncan around the idea of a Balanced Color Palette, specifically in that families and series of colors are optimized to work well with each other. For example, CN 011 is Light Straw, CN 012 is Bright Straw and CN 013 is Dark Straw. These three products (CN 011, 012 and 013) make a color family. Colors in the same families are chromatically designed to work well together. Light, Bright and Dark are the series of colors. Colors in the same series of colors were chromatically designed to work well together. The chromatic families and series of Duncan Concepts allow both the novice and professional user of Duncan Concepts to easily plan projects that will have the greatest color appeal.

    From a decorator's perspective, Duncan Concepts are a highly versatile product. Duncan Concepts can be applied as a one stroke for nearly translucent coverage, much like Duncan's EZ Strokes, two coats for a mottled or semi-opaque effect that can resemble a self-antiquing glaze (such as Duncan's Envision Glazes) or three coats for opaque coverage like Duncan's Cover Coats. Much like a true glaze, Duncan's Concepts will achieve a moderate gloss finish, much like a semi-gloss glaze, when the product is properly applied with 3 coats to achieve complete coverage. This glaze-like behavior allows Duncan's Concepts to be used in the place of a colored glaze for spot application of the product without requiring a clear glaze covering OR allows the Duncan Concepts to be used in a majolica technique over a white gloss or satin glaze while still retaining a glossy appearance.

    Beyond traditional low fire application (applied to Cone 04 bisque and glazed fired to Cone 06), Duncan's Concepts work reasonably well as a high fire underglaze for bisque color product. Like all brands of low fire underglazes when they are high fired, some color shift expected with Duncan's Concepts.

    Most importantly, the entire line of Duncan's Concepts are nontoxic so they are safe for use in the elementary school classroom and will be foodsafe when combined with an appropriate glaze, such as Duncan's Pure Brilliance Clear Glaze.

Learning About Concepts® Underglazes for Majolica and Bisque
Basic Instructions
1. Apply 1 coat of the Duncan Concepts for translucent designs.
2. Apply 3 coats of the Duncan Concepts for solid coverage.
3. Apply to shelf cone 04 bisque.
4. Fire to shelf cone 06.
5. Clean up with water.
6. Always refer to label instructions for proper application and usage.

Tips & Techniques
1. For Majolica, apply Concepts designs over 3 coats of SN 352 White Satin.
2. For quick and easy solid coverage, try the drop 'n fill technique. Generously load a #6 or #8 round brush with Concepts and drop color onto desired area. Let dry.
3. Concepts colors mix and blend easily. Be creative and mix your own blend using two or more Concept colors.
4. Duncan Concepts works well up to cone 5-6. For High Fire usage, ALWAYS test the compatibility of the Duncan Courtyard Glazes to your favorite moist clay or stoneware slip. 5. Because the Duncan Concepts produce consistent color results regardless of thickness of application, the Concepts are prefect for use in schools with basic bisque shapes or ceramic tile.
