    North Star's wall-mounted Standard Extruder models are the simplest and safest clay extruders for small to medium extrusions - the type of extrusions most potters and ceramic artists do the majority of the time.  North Star's clay extruders are fully guaranteed against defects in materials and workmanship for life and have proven their functionality and durability for many years by studios, schools and industrial customers.

North Star Standard Extruders

    North Star manufactures two models of the standard wall-mounted clay extruders.  The Stainless Standard Extruder from North Star features a stainless steel barrel, while the Regular Standard Extruder features a steel barrel finished with North Star's durable blue powder coating.  All of the wall-mounted standard extruder models feature a 4" square barrel that is tapered at the top for easy loading.  The standard extruder models are identical in shape, size, and capacity, and will accommodate any of North Star's large selection of standard extruder dies.

    All of the North Star standard clay extruders have a long extension handle to give extra leverage for small extrusions or stiff clay. The long extension handle provides a great deal of leverage for pushing clay easily and smoothly through the extruder die without excessive effort, and allows for a very long continual extrusion without any ratchet mechanism.  Eliminating the ratchet mechanism (as compared to other brands of low cost extruders) provides for a much smoother extrusion, as ratchet-type handles tend to leave slight bulges in the extrusion as pressure is released from the clay in the extruder barrel midway through the extrusion to accommodate the ratcheting motion.

    Using a simple compression handle handle design on the North Star clay extruders has many other advantages, as there are no dangerous shackles, fewer pinch points, no clumsy multi-jointed handle to come loose, and no post or expensive ratchet parts to wear out.  The design is also much safer, as the extruder handle is anchored at one fixed pivot point, completely eliminating the danger of a heavy steel bar slipping or suddenly offering no resistance.  Clay is loaded into the extruder barrel with the handle in the down position, again eliminating danger from a heavy, hard-to-control handle accidentally coming down on the operator causing injury.  As with all North Star Equipment products, safety is a foremost and primary consideration in the design and engineering of the standard extruders.

    Every standard extruder model comes with North Star's Basic Die Set for Standard Extruders, which includes 8 coil dies, 2 handle dies, 1 square coil, one hex coil, a blank die and a die mask.  Several of the extruder dies contain 4 cavities of different sizes or shapes, and the die mask is used to block off the three cavities not being used during an extrusion.  The Deluxe Stainless Steel Model #950 also comes with the Accessory Die Set, which includes additional solid dies was well as many popular hollow core dies in addition to the Basic Die Set.  In addition, every extruder model includes wall and/or post mounting hardware.

    All of North Star's standard dies are manufactured from 1/2 inch thick high-strength polyethylene, which is extremely wear-resistant and completely non-contaminating.  One of the exclusive features of North Star's extruder dies, is that the top edge of the die cavity is beveled to compact the clay as it passes through, helping to greatly reduce any instances of trapped air bubbles that may crack the clay during firing, and resulting in a crisp, smooth, and solid extrusion.  On the hollow extruder dies, there is a dished bevel on both the interior and exterior portions under each side of the Z-Brace (which holds the center of the hollow dies) that helps the extrusion to "heal" after it has been cut apart by the Z-Brace.

    The Z-Brace fits into a Z-shaped slot machined into the top of our hollow dies and is held in place by the barrel of the extruder.  When a hollow die is mounted in place, the center section of the hollow die is held in the correct location to ensure the wall thickness of the extrusion will be uniform all the way around.

    North Star has over 200 stock extruder dies that may be purchased individually and in money-saving sets.

North Star 940 Expansion Box Kit

The North Star Expansion Box was designed to easily fit all existing North Star standard extruders including the painted steel and the stainless steal models and allow the standard extruders to use the large 6" dies which previously could only be used with the North Star Big Blue Extruder.     The detachable Expansion Box is mounts to the bottom portion of North Star's Standard Extruder. The Standard Extruder normally mounts directly to the wall, but using the Expansion Box will require the Standard Extruder to be offset from the wall using the offsets included in the kit. The Expansion Box can remain on the Standard Extruder for use with the large 6" dies or, using the #982 4" Adapter Plate, can be easily interchanged between 4" and 6" extruder dies.     The expansion box is made of high quality aluminum. All the mating surfaces of the expansion box are machined flat for a tight seal. The die retainer mounting ears have steel inserts for the bolts to screw into. The gears with slots of the expansion box are machined to slide easily onto and out of the extruder. The die retainer ring and the hardware is made of steel. All outside surfaces are powder coated for a durable lasting finish.
