North Star Standard Throwing Bats

    North Star Pottery Wheel Throwing Bats, like all throwing bats, are essentially flat disks of a material to which a moist clay bind, drilled on centered holes to accept pins mounted in the head of a pottery wheel.  North Star's Pottery Wheel Throwing Bats are sized slightly larger than standard pottery wheel heads to allow ease of removal.  The standard throwing bats are made in available in 3 different materials.  North Star also manufactures a Universal Bat for production potters as well as specialty and custom bats.

North Star Duron Throwing Bats

    Duron, often called "Masonite" is the least expensive of the NorthStar Throwing Bats for the pottery wheel.  Duron bats are ¼" thick and smooth surface on both sides.  Available only in 13" and 15" sizes, Duron Pottery Wheel Bats are sold individually and in money saving 36 unit master cartons.  Duron bats will readily warp if not properly handled.

North Star Medex Throwing Bats

    Medex, often compared to marine plywood, is a manufactured wood product without formaldehyde that is considered the best wood material for pottery wheel bats because the highly durable Medex material will not warp or degrade over time like particle board, yet the water absorbing capabilities of Medex improves the setup time of large pots.  Medex Throwing Bats are 3/8" thick and are available in standard 13" and 15" sizes as well as oversized 18" and 21" sizes.  Oversized bats are possible with Medex because the strength of the material is capable of supporting large weights even if the bat is not fully supported by the head of the pottery wheel.  Medex Bats are sold individually and in money saving 24 unit master cartons. for the 13" and 15" sizes.

North Star Blue Plastic Throwing Bats

    North Star's Blue Plastic Bats are made from ¼" thick HDPE blue plastic finished with a matte pebble grain on both sides.  Designed to hold and release clay more easily than other plastic bats on the market, North Star's Blue Plastic Bats are ideal for the classroom as the bats can be easily cleaned and dried for use by the next class.  The Blue Bats will not warp, unless exposed to moderate heat (such as storing the bats on the back seat of the car on a hot summer's day.  Sold individually and in money saving 36 unit master cartons.

Important Notes about all Throwing Bats:

    The standard North Star pottery throwing bats are pre-drilled with two 3/8" holes on 10" center to fit the normal pottery wheel setup, such as the Speedball or Shimpo pottery wheel sold by Dogwood Ceramic Supply.  Please note, some mini pottery wheels (the models not sold by Dogwood) as well as some poor quality imported pottery wheels may not be drilled on 10" centers and may require a custom fitted bat.

     The North Star Throwing Bats are manufactured in 13" and 15" diameters so that when used on standard 12" or 14" pottery wheelhead ½" of the bat overhangs all the way around the wheelhead, making it much easier to remove the bat from the wheel without disturbing the thrown piece.  The 13" bat can be used on the 14" head, but removal may take some effort to grasp the edges.

North Star Universal Bat

   The North Star Universal Bat System was designed for throwing and keeping multiple small "footprint" wares, such as bowls and cups, on a space saving bats until they reach the leather hard stage for additional work, such as attaching handles.  The Universal Bat System combines an outer 13" Medex Bat with 5-1/2" square inserts made of low cost Duron. Indents are cut into the outer bat, while the indent itself fits tight into the opening and remains flush with the surface of the the outer bat.  The NorthStar Universal Bat is sold individually with 9 inserts.  Additional inserts are available in cases of 12.

    North Star's Handy Handle Paddle Bats are  one of a kind.  Originally designed for use with the North Star Tile Press, the Handy Handle Paddle Bats are popular for handbuilding, tile projects and working with slabs.  8" x 8" work surface, excluding the handle, the ¼" thick Duron Paddle Bats are sold individually.

The Simple UPS Shipping Rates include applicable insurance, oversized package fees and an allowance for the fuel surcharge.

The location of the customer will determine the shipping point (Dogwood Ceramic Supply warehouse or the North Star factory)

Add $5.00 per case for residential deliveries.

   All open stock (individual) quantities of the North Star Throwing Bats are shipped from the Dogwood Ceramic Supply Showroom and Warehouse.  Master Cartons may be shipped from the Dogwood warehouse or the North Star factory to qualify for the simplified shipping rates.  Multiple carton quantity purchases will be billed actual UPS rates based upon accurate shipping weight and the customer's location and as such may be lower or higher (on a per bat basis) than the simplified shipping rates.
