North Star Standard Throwing Bats
North Star Pottery Throwing Bats are made in various sizes and 3 different materials: Duron, often called "Masonite" is ¼" thick, smooth surface on both sides that is the least expensive of the NorthStar Throwing Bats. Duron Bats are packaged 12 per carton and are available in 13" and 15". Duron bats may warp if not properly handled Medex is a wood product made without formaldehyde. 3/8" thick and available in 13", 15", 18" and 21" sizes. The North Star Medex Bats handles clay like wood or Duron, but are waterproof and do not warp. Medex is extremely strong and capable of handling the large size bats without being fully supported by the head of the pottery wheel. Cartons of 6. More expensive than Duron, but permanent as Medex does not degrade like particle board and will not warp. North Star Plastic Bats are made from ¼" thick, matte pebble grain finish on both sides, blue plastic. Designed to hold and release clay more easily. Cartons of 10, available in 13" and 15" sizes.
All standard pottery throwing bats are pre-drilled with two 3/8" holes on 10" center to fit the latest designed Creative Industry and Shimpo pottery wheels that have been pre-drilled and fitted with bat pins. The standard widths of the bats are 13" and 15" diameters, so that when used on standard 12 or 14" pottery wheelhead, ½" of the bat overhangs all the way around the wheelhead, making it much easier to remove the bat from the wheel without disturbing the thrown piece.
Universal BATS The Universal Insert Bat, which saves a great amount of shelf space when making pieces with a small "footprint". The outer bat is 1/2 inch thick Medex and the inserts are 1/4 inch Duron which fit flush with the top of the outer bat. The inserts in 13 inch bats are 5-1/2 x 5-1/2 inches These bats are great for production potting. Making cups and small bowls is a snap with these. All you have to do lift the insert out and replace it with another one. If you make lots of small thrown objects the North Star Universal Bat is the one for you.
PADDLE BATS North Star's custom paddle bats are one of a kind. Originally designed for use with the North Star Tile Press, the paddle bats are popular for handbuilding, tile projects and working with slabs. 8" x 8" work surface, excluding the handle, the ¼" thick Duron Paddle Bats are sold in cartons of 12.
