Paragon GL 24 ADTSD The Alphabet Kiln
List Price $2935.00 Dogwood Ceramic Supply's Discounted Price $1965.00
Dogwood Ceramic Supply has given many unique nicknames to various Paragon Kilns,
but when one of our customers tried to recite the name of the Paragon GL24ADTSD
and end up referring to the kiln as the "Alphabet Kiln" we knew the nickname was
more than appropriate. There is nothing humorous about the Paragon
GL-24-ADTSD as it is one very serious glass kiln. The unusual name is
actually a description of the kiln. The kiln is part of the GL series of
Kilns from Paragon. The GL series are the professional GLass Kilns.
24 is the largest internal dimension of the kiln in inches. AD is
"Automatic Digital" which is a reference to the Sentry 2.0 Digital Controller
that is the heart of the kiln. TSD is the location of the elements in the
TOP, SIDE and DOOR. See, the name really isn't confusing. What the kiln can do is not very confusing either.... everything conceivable in glass. The kiln is a front loader. Glass artists appreciate the front loading of the kiln for ease of assembly of glass projects and of course the front loading door allows open the kiln chamber during firing to access the molten glass for raking and other techniques while NOT loosing all of the heat in the chamber like a top loading kiln. Speaking of loosing heat, loosing heat is not an issue with this kiln as all of the wall bricks are 3" thick for better energy efficiency and to allow slow even cooling of large structural glass objects. Glass objects? Did somebody mention large glass objects? Yes we did. The kiln chamber is big. 24" wide, 22½" deep and 15" high. The chamber is large enough to handle large glass objects like lamp shades. And most importantly with the independent control of the side wall and door elements versus the top element firing those large pieces can be easily accomplished. Like we said, the Paragon GL24ADTSD is a very serious glass kiln.
Firing performance is not the only consideration in the design of this kiln. Safety is another important consideration. Look at the basic design of the kiln. The brick bottom is located ABOVE the louvered bottom area of the kiln which is completely open from the front to the back of the kiln. The louvered bottom keeps the bottom rim of the kiln cool to the touch and allows the kiln to sit upon any sturdy work table or bench. The spring loaded latch handle can be easily operated with one hand, yet securely fastens the door in place. And speaking of door, that little blue box at the top of the kiln is an important feature. The little box is the Door Safety Switch. The Door Safety Switch is a fluid filled rocker switch mounted to the hinge assembly of the kiln that instantly shuts off power to all elements in the kiln whenever the kiln lid or door is opened while leaving the digital controller fully powered and able to resume the proper firing after the lid has been closed.
Who should buy the Paragon GL24ADTSD? Everybody of course! Seriously, this is a serious kiln. While the kiln can be appreciated by everybody, the GL24ADTSD is most often purchased by universities for glass research as well as production studios and serious glass artists. Because of the wide range of customers, and varying power requirements, this kiln is strictly made to order. And the kiln is popular. At times it can take Paragon 4-6 weeks to manufacture one of these kilns.
