Paragon Janus TnF 24

The Front Loader for Everybody

List Price $3190.00

Dogwood Ceramic Supply's Discounted Price $2135.00

The Paragon Janus 24 is the perfect kiln for everybody that needs a front loading kiln to do a bit of everything.  The Paragon Janus was based upon the ever popular GL-24 series of kilns and the various Custom Kiln modifications that were made to the GL-24 kiln to achieve a fully functional glass AND pottery front loading kiln with heating elements mounted in the top, sidewall and door.  With a flip of a switch the user can select between glass and pottery modes.  In glass mode, the top elements as well as the middle sidewall element and middle door element are powered.  In pottery mode all elements except the top (roof) element are powered.
Why a front loading kiln?  Being a box design is it possible to have elements firing from above (top element) as well as all 4 sides of a large piece of glass AND to have access to the hot kiln chamber for raking and other glass techniques.  The box kiln design also benefits potters that are seeking a kiln with more insulation to slow down the cooling of the kiln or hold the temperature for growing crystal glazes.

The Paragon Janus 24 is NOT routinely stocked by Dogwood Ceramic Supply, but is available for showroom pickup with advance order.

Options Explained:

Furniture:

Most customers will purchase the furniture kit, as without the furniture kit the user would be limited to firing ware just on the kiln bottom.  The furniture kit consists of 1 C-20 Full Shelf (20" x 20" x 5/8"), 2 C-20H Half Shelves (20" x 10" x 5/8"), 4 each of 1" wide Square Posts: ½", 1",2", 3", 4", 5" and 6" lengths, plus 1 lb bag of glass separator.  While the posts are the spacing saving 1" style they are quite suitable for holding the shelves.
Additional posts (of every size from 1" to 12") and shelves can be added to your order, or if you are close to The Showroom of Dogwood Ceramic Supply, stop by and pickup any additional posts or shelves that you might need.

Stands:
The Janus 24 is capable of resting on any heavy duty work table that brings the chamber to a convenient height for the user.  Paragon offers two stands (one with casters) for use the GL 24 and similar sized kilns.  The ST-8 GL Kiln Stand measures 30" x 30" and is 28¼" high while the ST-8-1 GL Kiln Stand with casters measures 30¾".  Both kiln stands are shipped fully assembled and weigh approximately 150 lbs.  The prices of the ST-8 GL Kiln Stands listed above include freight charges when shipped with a matching Paragon Kiln.  Save $10 when shipped unassembled.

Dogwood's recommendation:
The ST-8 is offered by Paragon for customers whom are unable to find a work table or bench capable of holding a 300+ lb. kiln.
Heavy duty work tables are usually available in the local market and are often big enough to allow the kiln user the extra space necessary for prepping their glass projects.
While metal is preferred, the work table can be made of wood as the louvered based of the kiln will keep the brick bottom of the kiln from contacting the table top.
Please consider a locally purchased work table before you consider the ST-8 Kiln Stands.
The key advantage of the Paragon ST-8 Kiln Stand is the availability of casters, as casters are not usually found on work table.

Orton Vent Master:
The Orton downdraft Vent Master is designed to remove noxious gases from a kiln during firing and exhausts the gases from the room.  For more information regarding kiln ventilation please refer to Dogwood Ceramic Supply's Orton Vent Master section on the Paragon Information page.
The optional Auxiliary Output (AOP) mounted on the control box of the kiln.  The AOP is a factory installed power supply that is operated through the Orton Sentry 2.0 digital Controller.  By programming the Sentry 2.0 controller and powering the vent through the AOP, the Vent Master can be operated in the most energy efficient and optimum mode for each type of firing.
Please note, the Orton Vent Master can be easily retrofitted to a kiln after purchase, but the AOP is only available as a factory installed option.

The Orton Vent Master and AOP is available as an option on most Paragon kilns.

S Type:
S Type Thermocouples are popular with potter's and production studios due to their long life and high degree of accuracy. For more information regarding the choice of thermocouples, please refer to Dogwood Ceramic Supply's S-Type versus K-Type section on the Paragon Information page.

APM Elements:
Standard kiln elements from all kiln manufacturers are made from Kanthal A1 or equivalent wire that is designed for a maximum temperature performance of Cone 10.  For must customers, the conventional element performs extremely well and are quite durable.  However, at temperatures above Cone 6, especially in the presence of some corrosive gases, the Kanthal A1 wire may suffer some premature fatigue and failure.   Theses gases are generally found with home made glazes that are "pushing the envelope", or in industrial settings.
APM elements are an advanced alloy produced by Kanthal that is resistant to many of the corrosive gases that could be produced from pottery glazes, is rated to perform to approximately 2700°F (much hotter than Cone 10 at 2340°F), and does not incur resistance changes over time from usage.  Bottom line, APM elements are far superior to the conventional elements.  They are also relatively expensive.
Customers that routinely fire to Cone 10, or near Cone 10, and have experienced the need to frequently (monthly, weekly, every firing) change elements in their existing kiln may want to consider adding APM Elements to their Dragon.  The good news is that APM elements can be retrofitted to any kiln at any time.
By the way, in 6+ years of frequent firings to Cone 6 Dogwood Ceramic Supply has never needed to replace a single element in our own Dragon.  Our Dragon is equipped with standard elements.

Lid Safety Switch (also known as Door Safety Switch):
Fluid filled rocker switch mounted to the hinge assembly of the kiln that instantly shuts off power to all elements in the kiln whenever the kiln lid or door is opened while leaving the digital controller fully powered and able to resume the proper firing after the lid has been closed.  The lid safety switch is optional on all Paragon kilns but is most commonly used with kilns which have elements in the lid or door, as well as kilns that may require frequent opening and closing of the kiln lid or door during firing.  The lid safety switch is required on all models of kilns exported to the UK.  $70.00 upgrade for all kilns.
