Paragon Pearl 44

The Clamshell Coffin Kiln

List Price $5760.00

Dogwood Ceramic Supply's Discounted Price $3720.00

Clamshell kilns get their name from the kiln design that looks like a clamshell, often with a chamber cavity to retain the kiln heat while the kiln is open.  Coffin kilns are elongated rectangles that accommodate lengthy pieces or several projects to be fired simultaneously.  A clamshell and a coffin all in one?  Well that would be the Paragon Pearl-44 Kiln.  The Paragon Pearl-44 is essentially two Paragon Pearl-22 kilns situated side by side mounted in a kiln stand on steroids.  And while we are mentioning steroids, let's not forget the independent element controls from the Paragon GL-24ADTSD and GL-44ADTS.  Speaking of the GL-44ADTS, the Pearl-44 is actually a better value than the GL-44ADTS and only sacrifices 3" in height of the chamber.

As much as the Pearl-44 is like the Pearl-22, the Pearl-44 is also quite different.  For starters the Pearl-44 uses 3" Ceramic Fiber in the top section.  The use of Ceramic Fiber makes the lid unit lighter than what it would be if standard kiln brick had been used, prevents element sagging issues and prevents many of the brick dust issues with kiln bricks in lids of kilns.  The Pearl-44 also includes expansion joints built into the wall bricks to allow for expansion during heating of the kiln and to improve the life of the wall bricks.  And we would be negligent if we failed to mention the heavy gauge 3" tubular steel kiln stand that can accept casters for ease of moving the heavy kiln. One additional benefit of the Pearl-44 over the Pearl-22 is the ability to easily add the Orton KilnVent to the kiln for venting of lusters and other gases.

For all the differences, the Pearl-44 has the same basic design features of the Pearl-22, including the clamshell design that allows for easy loading and assembly of glass projects at the eye level of the user inside the kiln chamber.  The voluminous top section will retain heat during firing stages when the kiln is open for working with the hot glass and the added sidewall element will help to reheat the chamber to restore any heat that was lost while the kiln was open.  The Pearl-44 chamber size (44" x 22" x 13") is big enough to handle larger sheets of glass or handle many smaller projects side by side.  And the Pearl-44 includes a lid safety switch to shut down power to the exposed elements whenever the kiln chamber is opened.
