Many Paragon kilns, as the Super Dragon, have started out in life as a custom kiln. The Paragon Pearl 56 is such a kiln. But Dogwood Ceramic Supply can't lay claim to the the Pearl-56 as this monster of a glass kiln was designed by Bullseye Glass to be the ultimate glass kiln. From Dogwood Ceramic Supply's perspective we think they succeeded. The Pearl 56 is 56" wide, hence the model name, 30" deep (front to back) and 16½" high. The clamshell is uniquely designed so that the lower front wall only towers 4½" above the kiln floor and 29" above the floor yielding great access for ease of assembly delicate glass projects within the kiln chamber. The upper chamber has two vents on the top and two peepholes on the front wall. Those peepholes are not the ordinary peephole found on other kilns, these peepholes are 2" by 3" rectangles to allow better viewing access to the kiln chamber. The peephole plugs are actually made from firebrick so that the plugs can be handled with standard high temperature gloves. The vents on the top are the same size as the peepholes and come equipped with hinged door covers and high temperature abrasion-resistant gaskets. The bottom of the kiln chamber is standard insulating firebrick (IFB) while the top chamber is composed entirely of 3" ceramic fiber. Ceramic Fiber in the upper chamber prevents the kiln brick dust issues with less expensive kilns and the Ceramic Fiber has been grooved to accept replaceable elements. The top chamber actually sits inside of a temperature resistant gasket mounted in the lower chamber wall and dual air pistons assist with the opening and closing of the top chamber. And then this entire brick and fiber chamber is then mounted into a welded 2" tubular steel frame with a storage shelf under the kiln chamber. At this point the kiln weighs approximately 1400 lbs. so of course the kiln is equipment with high capacity casters for ease of moving. When the kiln is located in it's proper home the 4 four leveling feet should be engaged to level the floor of the kiln chamber and to prevent the kiln from moving on the casters. Sounds Serious? Just wait, there is more! The Pearl-56 Kiln chamber is essentially all element. There are elements mounted in the chamber top as well as the walls and floor of the kiln chamber. As would be expected the top and bottom elements can be independently controlled through the use of infinite control switches mounted in the control panel. The top and floor elements are also mounted in an element groove that is smaller than the element to prevent element sagging and bulging issues. Mercury relays are standard on this kiln due to the reliability of the Mercury Relays and because standard relays can not handle the power distribution needed for a powerful kiln of this size. The control panel can be mounted on either the left or right hand side of the kiln and the panel is angled for comfortable operation of the infinite control switches and the digital controller. And of course the Pearl-56 is equipped with a lid safety switch so the kiln owner can work with the hot glass while the kiln is firing. Did Bullseye forget anything in the design of this kiln? We don't think so.
