Spectrum Glaze Crystals


    Spectrum Glaze Crystals are designed to melt and flow during the firing and can be added to nearly any glaze to achieve a wide variety of color combinations. The Spectrum Glaze Crystals resemble small dry colored rocks which can either be mixed with the liquid glaze or applied after the last coat of brushing glaze has been applied but before the glaze has dried. For the sample chips shown below, the Spectrum Glaze Crystals were applied to a nearly flat tile with either clear or black glaze and fired to either Cone 05 (Spectrum Low-Stone Glazes) or Cone 6 (Spectrum 1100 Series Stoneware Glazes) to achieve the displayed results. The Spectrum Glaze Crystals can be fired on vertical pieces if care is taken so that the flow of the crystal will not escape (flow) off the piece.


    The small bottle of Spectrum Glaze Crystals are typically enough of the crystals for more than a pint of glaze.  Spectrum Crystals, while lead-free and nontoxic, should NEVER be considered for dinnerware usage. The Crystal may cause stress in the glaze surface which could cause crazing (small spider web cracks in the glaze surface) that would harbor food particles and bacteria.

    For the sample chips shown above, the Spectrum Glaze Crystals were applied to a flat tile typically using clear glaze in combination with the Glaze Crystals.  The White (CR 02) and Clear (CR 12) Spectrum Glaze Crystals were applied to a black glaze to generate the contrast to properly showcase the results.  The CR 12 Clear Crystal, when fired to Cone 6, does nearly disappear into the colored glaze.


    The color tiles to the left of the name of the Spectrum Glaze Crystal were fired to Cone 05, while the color tiles to the right of the product name were fired to Cone 6.  At the higher temperature (Cone 6), the Glaze Crystal will eagerly flow, even when fired on a nearly flat tile.  If fired to Cone 6 on a vertical item, the Spectrum Glaze Crystal can easily flow off the ware if care is not taken to prevent the significant movement.


    Using the Spectrum Glaze Crystals is actually quite easy.  The small dry Glaze Crystal can be readily mixed into a colored or clear glaze for simple and trouble free application OR the Glaze Crystal can be applied by hand to the wet surface of a colored or clear glaze to precisely control where the Glaze Crystal is applied.

    Spectrum's Glaze Crystals are simple way to add unique color combinations to a rather plain glazes, such asDuncan's Envision Glazes.  In simple language, Spectrum's Glaze Crystals are Duncan's Crystal Glazes on steroids.  Ok, maybe not steroids, but the Spectrum Glaze Crystals are definitely for children and adults who desire to create their own color combinations outside of the ordinary.  Try Spectrum 928 Oxblood with CR 01 White Crystal.  Or how about Oxblood with CR 01 White Crystal combined with CR 06 Green Crystal for a nice Christmas Motiff?  Who said color combinations have to boring and predictable?   More importantly than trying out goofy color combination of glazes and crystals, using the Spectrum Glaze Crystals allow the user to decorate their projects with the Glaze Crystals precisely placed to best accent the projects.





Additional Information About Spectrum's Glaze Crystals


    Spectrum's Glaze Crystals are not to be confused with Crystalline Glazes as the Spectrum Glaze Crystal will only melt and flow in the firing versus the "growing" that occurs with the true Crystalline Glazes during the extremely long hold times common with Crystalline Glaze firing.  That said, for most of the world (or those without access to their own kiln), the Spectrum Glaze Crystal is the next best thing to the true Crystalline Glazes.
