Spectrum 400 Series Super-Strokes Underglazes

    The Spectrum Super-Strokes 400 Series Underglaze was specifically designed for bisque application. The Super-Strokes Underglaze line consists of 70 rich, vibrant underglaze colors that are opaque with 3 coats, semi-opaque with 2 coats and semi-transparent with 1 coat application and can be used as a one-stroke underglaze for less critical applications.  Spectrum's Super-Strokes are packaged in 2 and 8 ounce squeeze bottles.  The smallest size is packaged in 2 ounce soft-sided squeeze bottles with a writer tip that is factory sealed to prevent drying out of the product.  The writer bottle is also found on the 500 Series Underglaze and the Raised Accent Colors.

General, Safety & Product Information:

   Spectrum's SuperStrokes 400 Series Underglazes are identical in formula Spectrum's classic 300 Series Majolica-Ultraglaze.  The difference between the 300 and 400 series of underglazes is in the color names and the method of packaging.  The 300 series is packaged in traditional wide-mouth bottles and gallons, while the 400 series is packaged in consumer friendly 2oz and 8oz squeeze bottles and traditional gallons.   Dogwood Ceramic Supply has chosen to stock the 400 Series Super Strokes over the 300 Series Majolica Ultraglaze due to the ease of product display and consumer usage.

    The entire line of Spectrum 400 Series of Underglazes are lead-free, nontoxic and food-safe when the item has been glazed with a food-safe glaze and properly fired.  The 400 Series is a highly versatile product that can used as a majolica color on top of a while base glaze, or as an underglaze underneath a clear glaze, or even can be used as a glaze.

     For the majolica technique apply an appropriate base glaze, typically a low moving white satin or white gloss glaze, to the entire piece.  After the glaze has thoroughly dried, the decorating process with the 400 Series Underglaze can be started.  One coat application will yield a traditional majolica look in which some of the base glaze will appear through the color.  Two coats will typically yield a high gloss nearly opaque appearance.  Three coats may be excessive, as the base glaze and the underglaze may combine to be too thick of glaze application.

     When used as a traditional underglaze, apply the 400 Series SuperStrokes to bisque in the same manner that you would apply the 500 Series underglaze to greenware.  Three coats of SuperStrokes will be opaque, two coats will be semi-opaque, and one coat will be semi-transparent.  When three coats of SuperStrokes is applied and fired the color will be fully developed with a bright glossy glaze appearance.

     Spectrum SuperStrokes are color stable from Cone 06 to Cone 6, with most of the colors showing little color change, except the pinks and purples that are not as temperature stable as the other colors.  The SuperStrokes can be used as a glaze on their own, over the entire firing range of Cone 06 to Cone 6, and at the higher temperatures the underglaze has little shifting or movement on its own.  While the SuperStrokes behave much like a true glaze and may be used with the Spectrum 1100 Series Stoneware Glazes as a glaze, the SuperStrokes should be glazed with a clear glaze or used in the majolica technique over another glaze if the item is to be used for dinnerware.

Spectrum 400 Series underglaze for both low and high fire bisque application will self gloss just like a glaze but are better used for decorative techniques.
