Spectrum 500 Series Versatile Underglazes

    The Spectrum 500 Series Versatile Underglazes are traditional opaque underglazes in a full palette of 70 rich, vibrant colors which can be applied to either greenware or bisque and have a broad firing range suitable for either low fire or high fire usage. The Spectrum 500 Series Versatile Underglazes are opaque with 3 coats, semi-opaque with 2 coats and semi-transparent with 1 coat application and can be used as a one-stroke underglaze for less critical applications. The Spectrum 500 Series Underglazes are packaged in gallons, wide mouth pints for schools and production as well as 2 ounce soft-sided squeeze bottles which are perfect for hobby customers who wish to experiment with underglazes.  The 2 ounce squeeze bottles are also equipped with a writer tip that is factory sealed to prevent drying out of the product. The writer bottle is also found on the 400 Series Underglaze and the Raised Accent Colors.

Select gallons may be stocked by Dogwood Ceramic Supply, with the entire line in gallon size being available with an advanced order. Volume discounts are available for purchases of Spectrum 500 Series Versatile Underglazes.

    The entire line of Spectrum 500 Series of Versatile Underglazes are nontoxic and food-safe when the item has been glazed with a food-safe glaze and properly fired.  Unlike most other brands of traditional underglaze, Spectrum uses a frit (glaze) base rather than a slip (clay) base for the underglaze.  The advantage to the user is that these versatile underglazes can be used with or without a clear glaze and while the product prefers to be applied to greenware, the product does work well when applied to bisque.  If left unglazed, the color of the Spectrum 500 Series Versatile Underglaze will be fully developed with a soft matte appearance at low fire temperatures, and a slight glossy sheen at high fire temperatures.  As shown on the low fired tile pictures, the top half of the tile has been left unglazed and the bottom half has been glazed.  The Spectrum 500 Series Versatile Underglazes are capable of being fired from Cone 06 to Cone 10, with best performance between Cone 06 and Cone 6 in oxidation (electric kiln).  At cone Cone 6, most of the colors of the Spectrum Versatile Underglazes show little color change, except the pinks and purples that are not as temperature stable as the other colors.  The opaque coverage of the Spectrum 500 Series Versatile Underglaze was achieved with 3 flowing coats of product on a white tile. If the Spectrum 500 Series Versatile Underglazes are used on a dark colored clay, some clay color may show through the underglazes especially so with the lighter colors of underglaze. The Spectrum 500 Series Versatile Underglaze can be used as a One-Stroke underglaze, though the product is not as smooth and refined as Duncan's EZ Strokes for critical application.

    Please Note:  Each of the Spectrum 500 Series Versatile Underglazes is identical in color to the Spectrum 400 Series Underglazes.  While the product names may not match, 510 is identical to 410 in color.  This simple color structure means customers can readily convert their projects from one underglaze series to the other and be assured that their colors will match.
