Click on a Bell to see the Spectrum Laying Technique.
All of the Spectrum Glaze Bells were created by layering or
combining two Spectrum glazes together (with the exception of the three metallic
finishes which were accomplished with just one glaze). One or both of the
glazes used on the bells are considered reactive type glazes. Reactive glazes
react to clay composition, whether fired on a vertical or horizontal surface,
firing temperature and hold time, contact with other glazes, as well as
application thickness. In general, reactive glazes will readily flow (move)
during the firing.
Spectrum Glazes can be readily combined
together to generate new combinations. Rather than copying the works of
others, why don't you grab two of your Spectrum Glazes and develop your own
combinations?
Safety:
Due to ever changing safety standards as well as changes in the raw materials
that are used to manufacture the products, the information in the Spectrum Glaze
Library is considered a general guide and is not the final authority regarding
toxicity and dinnerware safety. Always refer to the specific product label for
complete toxicity and dinnerware safety information.
All Spectrum Glazes are lead free and with just a few exceptions all glazes are
dinnerware safe. However, some Spectrum Glazes which are considered toxic in the
premixed liquid form because of excessive levels of soluble copper or other
metals and while the finished product may be dinnerware safe, these potentially
toxic liquid glazes should only be used with appropriate safety precautions, and
children, women who are pregnant or may be considering becoming pregnant, or
people with other health issues should avoid using these glazes.
Spectrum Underglazes are nontoxic and are dinnerware safe when combined with an
appropriate foodsafe clear glaze.
Performance:
The digital sample pictures of Spectrum Glazes and Underglazes on this website
show the product fired on a white, nearly flat, horizontally fired, tile that
was fired to the appropriate cone. With the exception of the Spectrum Raku
glazes, all products were fired in oxidation (electric kiln). The digital
picture is the best means of showcasing the results that may be obtained with
each product, however, due to variances in computer displays, ambient lighting
conditions and other factors, the digital pictures should only be considered an
approximation of the results that may be obtained. The use of a clay other than
white may dramatically affect the color that is obtained, especially with
lighter colored glazes and underglazes as well as translucent glazes.
Product application and usage information is on individual product pages.
Customers experiencing glaze application issues should read have you heard my
coat story for assistance.
Inventory:
Dogwood Ceramic Supply actively stocks Spectrum Glazes and Underglazes for the
potter and ceramist at our Gulfport Mississippi showroom and warehouse. The
primary emphasis of Dogwood Ceramic Supply's inventory is those products that
are compatible with Cone 4-6 firing in oxidation including brushing and dipping
glazes as well as traditional underglazes which are high-fire compatible. In addition to the high fire
glazes and underglazes, Dogwood Ceramic Supply also stocks a limited selection
of Spectrum's low-fire glazes, specifically the Spectrum Low Stone Glazes.
Spectrum Glaze products not stocked by Dogwood Ceramic Supply will require an
advanced order on one of Dogwood Ceramic Supply's monthly Spectrum Glaze orders.
Custom Glaze Colors:
Spectrum manufactures custom colors of glazes and underglazes for the active
production studios. Glazes are available in both dipping and brushing formula,
underglazes in just brushing formula. Advance order is required for custom
colors and delivery to Dogwood Ceramic Supply will be combined with one of
Dogwood Ceramic Supply's monthly Spectrum Glaze orders. Price for custom colors
will vary according to market demands for raw materials and minimum order
requirements (ranging from 5 gallons to 25 gallons per color per production run)
differ for each product and color. Allow 2 to 8 weeks for delivery of custom
glaze colors.
