Spectrum Raised Accent Colors

Spectrum RAC Raised Accent Colors

Spectrum Raised Accent Colors (RAC) are slip-based colors (englobes) which are available in 2 ounce applicator pens with a fine metal tip for decorating on greenware or bisque.  The Spectrum Raised Accent Colors are used to create embossed or raised designs on ceramic decorative work because the colors do not flatten out when they are fired.  Spectrum Raised Accent Colors are AP Nontoxic and easy to use even by children.  Additional product information regarding the Spectrum Raised Accent Colors is at the bottom of this page.  The Spectrum Raised Accent Colors are $4.95 MSRP per bottle, including the separate metal writer tip.  The Spectrum Raised Accent writer bottle is also found on the 400 Series Underglaze and 500 Series Underglaze.

Usage:

Each 2 ounce squeeze bottle of Spectrum's Raised Accent Colors (RAC) comes with a separate metal writer tip in addition to the writer tip built into the plastic bottle.  The metal writer tip may be used with the Spectrum's Raised Accent Color bottle to achieve finer lines than what is typically produced with the plastic writer tip (as shown above on the 1 inch sample tiles).  To use the metal writer tip, simply screw the metal tip onto the plastic writer bottle.  The threads within the metal writer tip will easily grip the soft plastic of the writer bottle.

Application:

With the RAC bottle away from the piece, squeeze the bottle with the writer tip downward to remove any air bubbles and to establish a consistent flow of color. Then hold the writer tip in contact with the surface of bisque or greenware and gently squeeze the bottle to apply the product. Contacting the ware with the writer tip is not harmful, as the slight scratching of the item surface improves the contact between the color and the piece. Hold the RAC bottle at a slight angle to the surface of the item, as an opening for the color to flow through is required. The color is quite thick and you may need to write much more slowly than you would with a pen so that there is time for the liquid to flow through the tip. The thickness of the line can be varied by changing finger pressure and writing speed.

The Raised Accent Colors may be too stiff or thick for some customers, especially small children or those with physical limitations, to easily control the application. The Spectrum Raised Accent Colors can be heated slightly in a warm water bath, much in the same manner as you would warm a baby's bottle, to approximately 90°F. The warmed product will be less viscous (thick) and will be much easier to squeeze from the plastic bottle, but still thick enough to properly control the application.

Care of the Writer Tip:

The liquid in the Spectrum Raised Accent pen is similar to a colored slip, and, like slip, will harden in the writer tip unless you prevent that from occurring. It is recommended that a staple from a typical office stapler is used as a reamer to push through the metal tip. Straighten the staple before use. The staple can remain in the metal tip when the RAC is not in use to prevent clogging. The plastic nipple should be used on the bottle whenever the product is not used for more than a few hours, and the metal tip should be soaked in water to prevent hardening and becoming clogged.

The metal writer tip is best cleaned by using an empty RAC bottle filled with water and flushing the tip until clean.

Raised Accent Color Temperature Range:

As previously noted, the Spectrum Raised Accent Colors are used to create embossed or raised designs on ceramic decorative work because the colors do not flatten out when they are fired.  The Spectrum Raised Accent Colors do not flatten when they are fired because all of the products (except RAC 1 White) are manufactured from a high temperature ceramic (stoneware) slip with a broad firing range that allows the product to be used on both high fire and low fire moist clays.  The RAC 1 White has a high frit (glaze) content necessary to achieve the opaque white color and as such may be less tolerant of high temperatures which could result in some flattening or movement at Cone 6 or higher temperatures.

At temperatures at and above Cone 6 the Spectrum Raised Accent Colors may be less color stable and could fade or shift, much in the same way as the Spectrum 400 and 500 series underglazes shift in color at high temperatures.

Additional Information About Spectrum's Raised Accent Colors

Spectrum's Raised Accent Colors (except for white) do not include any glaze (frit) material in the product formula.  This means the RAC will not self gloss and should be covered with an appropriate clear glaze when a fully finished appearance is desired or to seal the product to comply with dinnerware safety issues.  When a gloss appearance is desired and the project is not suitable for application of clear glaze, it may be desirable to change from a slip based raised color product to a glazed based product.  Duncan's French Dimensions are glazed based and may be the ideal substitution for Spectrum's Raised Accent Colors.  Please note, Duncan's French Dimensions are not recommended for high fire application.
