Spectrum Glaze Library Home

Additional Spectrum Information

Safety:
Due to changes in safety standards and raw materials that are used to manufacture the products, the information on the website is considered a general guide and is not the final authority regarding toxicity and dinnerware safety.  Always refer to the specific product label for complete toxicity and dinnerware safety information.
Spectrum clearly identifies their few glazes that contain lead through the use of a BLACK label and appropriate safety information on the label.  Appropriate safety precautions should be taken when using a lead based glaze and these glazes should never be used by children, women who are pregnant or may be considering becoming pregnant, or people with other health issues.
There are a few Spectrum glazes that are listed as being toxic in the premixed liquid form.  These glazes typically contain excessive levels of soluble copper or other metals and while the finished product may be dinnerware safe, the liquid glaze should only be used with appropriate safety precautions, and children, women who are pregnant or may be considering becoming pregnant, or people with other health issues should avoid using these glazes.

Performance:
Spectrum's products were designed for use with moist clay body, and all firing information within this website and on the product labels is specifically applicable to moist clay.  If you use Spectrum's products with cast slip, such as Mackie's Slip or Seeley's Stoneware Slip, a small change in the firing temperatures of the glaze may be required to meet the technical specifications of the slip.
The digital sample pictures within this website show the product fired on a white, nearly flat, horizontally fired, tile that was fired to the appropriate cone.  With the exception of the Raku glazes, all products were fired in oxidation (electric kiln).  The digital picture is the best means of showcasing the results that may be obtained with each product, however, due to variances in computer displays, ambient lighting conditions and other factors, the digital pictures should only be considered an approximation of the results that may be obtained.  The use of a clay other than white may dramatically affect the color that is obtained, especially with lighter colored glazes and underglazes.

Inventory:
Dogwood Ceramic Supply actively stocks Spectrum Glazes for the potter and ceramist at our Gulfport Mississippi showroom and warehouse.  The primary emphasis of Dogwood Ceramic Supply's inventory is those products that are compatible with Cone 4-6 firing in oxidation.  Spectrum's complete line of 1100 Series Stoneware Glazes are actively stocked by Dogwood Ceramic Supply, as is Spectrum's Nova Glazes in wide-mouth gallons for dipping.  Spectrum's complete line of 300-400, 500 and 600 Series of underglaze products are stocked in the 2 ounce sample size, pints (8 ounce for 400 series), as well as select gallons of the most popular colors.  All of Spectrum's Cone 4-6 accessory products, such as Raised Accent Colors and Glaze Crystals are also completely stocked.
Dogwood Ceramic Supply also actively stocks the complete lines of Spectrum's Raku Glazes and the popular 900 Series Low Stone Glazes in pint size, as well as select products from other series of Spectrum products.
Products that are not stocked will require an advanced order on one of Dogwood Ceramic Supply's biweekly Spectrum Glaze orders.

Custom Glaze Colors:
Spectrum manufactures custom colors of glazes and underglazes.  Glazes are available in both dipping and brushing formula, underglazes in just brushing formula.  Advance order is required for custom colors, and delivery to Dogwood Ceramic Supply will be combined with one of Dogwood Ceramic Supply's biweekly Spectrum Glaze orders.  Price for custom colors will vary according to market demands for raw materials, and minimum order requirements differ for each product and color, with minimums ranging from 5 gallons to 25 gallons per color per production run.  Allow 2 to 8 weeks for delivery of custom glaze colors.
