Speedball Bat Pins

    Bat Pins slide through a small hole on the pottery wheelhead and are held in place by hand tightening the matching wing nut.  Bat Pins are not permanently fastened as the Bat Pins are designed to be easily adjustable so that the pottery wheel user can properly center the bat to the head by loosening the wing nut and shifting the bat ever so slightly from side to side.  Unfortunately, because the bat pins are easily adjusted, the bat pin (bolt) or the wing nut are often tossed with the clay debris when cleaning the pottery wheel.

Don't worry, Dogwood Ceramic Supply keeps plenty of Speedball Bat Pins in stock.

    Speedball Bat Pins use SAE sized bolt heads and 1" shaft length to accommodate all Creative Industries (Speedball) Pottery Wheels.  The Speedball Bat Pins also fit Shimpo's Professional Pottery Wheels.  The Speedball Bat Pin seldom fits other brands of Pottery Wheels because either the 1" shaft length Bat Pin or the wing nut itself is not accommodated between the wheel frame and head.

    Please note, Bat Pins of some type are STANDARD EQUIPMENT on new pottery wheels from all manufacturers.  However, because pottery wheel manufacturers list Bat Pins as optional equipment, some unscrupulous resellers are charging their customers for an accessory that is actually standard equipment with the product.

Speedball Universal Pottery Wheel Bats

    Speedball's Universal Pottery Wheel Bats are manufactured from injection molded plastic which can not warp during normal usage. The "Easy Lift Rim" around the outside edge of the Speedball Universal Pottery Wheel Bats creates a small lip that allows the bat to be easily lifted off the wheel head, so wheel head sized bats can purchased and the user can have full access to the splash pan surrounding the wheelhead.  As the Speedball Universal Pottery Wheel Bat uses a dedicated bat pin mount, the mounting holes do not penetrate the surface of the bat so your pot bottoms won't be marked or having to clean clay out of bat holes or pins.

   In order to make the bats universal, the Speedball Universal Pottery Wheel Bats have both 9" and 10" center-to-center pin mounting systems. The bats are self adjusting for wheels that may not be drilled perfectly, and have rounded edges to guide the pins into the mounting slots.

    The 7 ½" square bats are designed for space saving applications, allowing many pieces to be kept drying on the bats in a very small space.... perfect for the active classroom or production studio.

Speedball Clay Boss Pottery Wheel

    The Speedball Clay Boss Pottery Wheel was designed from the ground up to meet the performance and durability needs of classroom and professional pottery studios while still being inexpensive for the beginning potter.  The Speedball Clay Boss Pottery Wheel, formerly the Creative Industries Clay Boss Pottery Wheel, was acquired from Creative Industries in 2009.  Under Creative Industries' ownership, the Clay Boss underwent 3 major modifications since they introduced the pottery wheel to the market in the mid-90's, including upgrades to the electronic controller, increased torque and horsepower for greater throwing capacity and changes to the work surface to increase space and decrease the shipping weight.  Today the Speedball Clay Boss Pottery Wheel is the standard by which all other pottery wheels must be measured.

    All Speedball Clay Boss Pottery Wheels include the heavy duty splash pan wide enough to hold your trimmings, 2 pottery throwing bats with SAE bat pins and a How-to-Throw instructional DVD as standard equipment.

Shipping and Basic Wheel Design:

    The Speedball Clay Boss Pottery Wheel qualifies for inexpensive UPS shipping rates.  The shipping box is 30L x 25W x 18H and weighs only 66 lbs.  At 66 lbs the shipping cost of the Clay Boss Pottery Wheel is about half the cost of the 120+ lb shipping rate for competing pottery wheels.  Physically the work table is fairly good size at 26" x 21", which allows room for a large splash pan to surround the 14" steel wheel head and still have room for buckets and tools to be stored on the table top.  The wheel head is made from reinforced steel with a long lasting polypropylene composite surface to prevent rusting.  The use of a coated steel wheel head rather than stainless steel yields a stronger wheelhead which is lighter in weight and reduces the selling price of the pottery wheel.  The large work table surface was changed to polyethylene in 2006 as polyethylene will never rust and further reduces the shipping weight.  In 2007 the heavy duty steel frame with tripod legs was redesigned so that the legs allow quick assembly by the user.  The user assembly legs permit the shipping costs of the wheel to be further reduced.  Regardless of the design of the legs and table top, the heavy duty frame does not flex when the Dogwood Ceramic Supply webmaster is standing on the wheelhead !

    One additional note: The Speedball Clay Boss Pottery Wheel is light enough to be easily moved or handled by children in the classroom when storage of the wheel is necessary.  Try that with a pottery wheel weighing 120+ lbs.

Performance and Components:

    The Clay Boss Pottery Wheel was designed to use modular parts common to other industrial products which yields an inexpensive pottery wheel that is both powerful, reliable and easy to repair.

    What about the quality of the parts?  The first concern for any pottery wheel is the electric motor.  Traditionally most pottery wheels have used an ultra high performance electric motor which are manufactured in low volumes (meaning high cost).  The goal for the Clay Boss was to find a motor that was light in weight, durable, capable of high torque, which would translate into high weight capacity of the wheel, and of course could be produced in high volumes so the costs would remain low.  Fantasy land?  No, such motors really do exist.  Check the motor in your electric clothes dryer or on your treadmill.  Yep, other industries have similar needs, and their extremely high manufacturing volumes mean their motors are relatively inexpensive versus limited edition motors.  The electric motor of the Clay Boss has been upgraded over the years, the current electric motor of the Speedball Clay Boss is rated for 1/2 horsepower which is capable of centering 100 lbs of moist clay and is more than capable of spinning the weight of the Dogwood Ceramic Supply webmaster.

Yes, the Clay Boss Pottery Wheel really does have enough power to spin a hefty webmaster!

    The high level of performance is achieved through a digital controller (mounted to the frame of the wheel) that regulates power levels being sent to the electric motor and maintains wheel head speed under changing loads. Electronics are shrinking, becoming more powerful and going down in price every day.  A simple, inexpensive digital controller is all it takes to achieve this high level of performance and by sharing controller designs with other industries to further reduced the cost of the controller.

    The digital controller is mated with a foot pedal for smooth variable speed control from 0 to 240 RPM.  The controller and foot pedal are modular in design for ease of manufacturing and to allow the user to swap parts should a part fail during the Speedball 5 year warranty.

    5 year warranty? Yes, 5 year warranty. Considering the durability of the parts exceed the needs of the user, 5 years seems to be quite appropriate.  The warranty covers parts and labor when the item is returned to the factory.  Transportation costs to the factory are the responsibility of the customer.  Speedball pays the return freight.  Did we mention the parts are modular?  Modular parts means only the defective part, not the entire wheel, will need to be returned to the factory should repairs ever need to completed.
