Standard Ceramic Supply's Slips, Clays and Supplies

Standard Ceramic Supply, aka Standard Ceramics, is a Carnegie Pennsylvania company established in 1960 to supply moist clays and related supplies to the school and professional ceramic markets through their Pittsburgh (Carnegie) area manufacturing plant as well as through clay distributors in the Eastern United States and a limited number of export markets.

The primary emphasis of Standard Ceramic Supply is their extensive line of nontoxic moist clays, of which Dogwood Ceramic Supply maintains an active inventory of about 20 stock clay bodies.  During the past decade, Standard Ceramics has expanded their product selection to include stoneware, porcelain and low fire casting slips which are critically important to support the slip casting market.

Dogwood Ceramic Supply is the largest Standard Ceramic Supply distributor in the Deep South region and handles bulk clay and slip sales throughout our the region as well as to the Standard Ceramic Supply customers in the Western United States.

Standard Ceramic Supply's world famous moist clays are always stocked by Dogwood Ceramic Supply in quantities sufficient to meet the needs of every professional potter or school program.

Standard Ceramic Supply Wax Resist

Standard Wax Resist for potters

Standard Ceramic Supply's Wax Resist is used to repel glaze and underglaze from undesired areas of clay or ceramic wares.  Wax resist, technically a natural or synthetic wax emulsion with a low solidification temperature such that the product remains liquid at room temperatures for ease of application, is used to repel underglazes for decorative techniques as well as broad coverage to repel glazes.  Any glaze (or underglaze) that is not repelled by the wax resist can then be easily removed with a slightly wetted brush or sponge prior to firing. During the firing process the residual wax will combust (burn off) leaving a clean surface or the underlying color products.

In the simplest application, wax resist is used to prevent glazes from being applied to the bottom of a clay pot, thus (hopefully) preventing the glaze from fusing the clay pot to the kiln shelf.  In more advanced applications the use of wax resist allows traditional underglazes, such as Spectrum 500 Series, to be applied such that one color does not overlap another.

Wax resist is usually brushed or sponged as desired though clay wares can be dipped into the wax resist as needed for broad product (wax) application.

Always reserve brushes and sponges strictly for use with Wax Resist as it is virtually impossible to clean the residual wax resist from brushes or sponges.

Please note, wax resist does NOT prevent the glaze from running/moving during the firing process.  The purpose of wax resist is strictly to prevent application of glaze to that particular area.  Reactive glazes, such as Spectrum's 1100 Series and Nova Glazes, as well as excessively applied glazes can and still will move during the firing process to cover the areas previously covered by the wax resist.

Warning: The use of wax resist may damage elements in electric kilns.  All brands of wax resist have a well defined combustion point and may create a reduction (oxygen eliminated) atmosphere within the kiln if a large quantity of wax resist is present.  Even the addition of an Orton Kiln Vent may be inadequate to prevent a reduction atmosphere from being achieved if excessive quantities of wax resist are present.  IF wax resist is to be used, it is prudent to always use the least amount of wax required to achieve the desired results.

All wax emulsions, including Standard Ceramic Supply's Wax Resist, should be considered a toxic product, not for use in Elementary Schools or by those who are unable to understand basic safety instructions.

Standard Ceramic Supply's Wax Resist, like all brands of wax resist type products, is one of the least tolerant cold temperature products sold by Dogwood Ceramic Supply.  Preventing freeze damage is critically important.  Wax Resist will NOT be shipped if the low temperature will drop to or below 32°F at any point between Dogwood Ceramic Supply and the customer.

Standard Ceramic Supply's Wax Resist sold by Dogwood Ceramic Supply is available in both pints and gallons.
