Standard S-101 Buff Clay (Cone 02-9)
Standard Clay's S-101 Buff Clay is an all-purpose lightly textured stoneware
with an extremely wide-firing range and no grog for throwing and modeling.
Standard S-101 Buff Clay is very light buff color at low temperatures, becoming
a warm light buff color at Cone 6, as shown on the left. The color approaches a
soft gray at Cone 9, shown in the middle. In reduction at Cone 9, shown on the
right, the clay is a warm medium brown with a soft speckling of lighter colors.
Standard S-101 Buff Clay is considered the universal clay due to the broad
firing range and light color that is suitable for many different glazes.

Standard S-103 Red Clay (Cone 06-2)
Standard Clay's S-103 Red Clay is a very smooth, low fire, plastic, terra-cotta
body, without the addition of grog or coarse clays. Standard S-103 Red Clay is
an excellent for the classroom, and may be used in a variety of techniques,
though throwing with the clay is rather limited due to the smooth consistency.
In oxidation firing the clay is a traditional terra-cotta color at Cone 06, and
a very deep brick red at cone 2. The clay sample on the left was fired to Cone
06, the right sample was fired to Cone 2. Potter's seeking a low fire or
midrange firing red clay for use on the wheel should seriously consider
Standard's S-104 Red Clay with Grog.

S104 Red Clay with Grog

S104 Red Clay with Grog (Cone 06-4)
Standard Clay's S-104 Red Clay with Grog is a moderately textured, versatile low
fire clay with 12% fine grog and an extended firing range. Standard S-104 Red
Clay with Grog is good for hand building or slab work. The large amount of fine
grog does not preclude this clay from being thrown on the wheel. In oxidation
firing, the clay is a medium terra-cotta color at Cone 06, and nearly dark red
at Cone 4. The clay sample on the left was fired to Cone 06, the right sample
was fired to Cone 4. The addition of grog is the only thing that distinguishes
Standard's S-104 Red Clay with Grog from Standard's S-103 Red Clay.

that quite plastic without any grog. Standard S-105 White Earthenware Clay is an

underglazes. The clay sample on the left is S105 White Earthenware Clay fired at
Cone 04. The clay sample on the right is S105-NTG White Earthenware Clay with
Grog also fired at Cone 04. NT refers to the absence of talc in the clay
formula, NTG means no-talc plus added grog. Standard S-105 is the perfect clay
for use with Spectrum's Low Stone Glazes.

S112 Speckled Brown Stoneware Clay

S112 Speckled Brown Stoneware Clay (Cone 4-6)
Standard Clay's S-112 Speckled Brown Stoneware Clay is a lightly textured,
plastic clay with 4% fine grog that is excellent for throwing and modeling. The
addition of granular manganese gives a speckled surface that is attractive both
glazed and unglazed. At Cone 4 in oxidation, shown on the left, the color is a
light warm brown with light manganese speckling. As shown on the right, the
color becomes less warm, and deepens and darkens to nearly a medium brown, with
more pronounced speckling as the clay approaches Cone 6. As manganese is gaseous
at higher temperatures use a slower firing to avoid trapped surface gases that
can cause glaze bubbling. Good results may also be expected in reduction
firings.
Standard Ceramic Supply's S-112 Speckled Brown Stoneware Clay is used by
professional potters, schools, colleges and universities across North America
and is Dogwood Ceramic Supply's best selling clay. Standard S-112 Clay is
extremely popular with Spectrum's 1100 Series Stoneware Glazes.
Standard S-225 Brown Stoneware Clay is identical to S-112 in color and texture
except for the granular manganese which is added to S-112.

well to all techniques. Standard S-153 Stoneware Clay is an excellent clay for
the production potter as well as the classroom. Contains 9% fine grog. As shown

10. In reduction, shown on the right, the clay is a rich gray brown at Cone 10,
with noticeable speckling. Standard S-153 is similar to S-306 Warm Brown

to the clay to allow for greater wet strength when throwing.

S181 White Stoneware Clay

S181 White Stoneware Clay (Cone 6-10)
Standard Clay's S-181 White Stoneware Clay is a very smooth white stoneware body
without fire clay to add texture or tooth to the clay. Standard S-181 White
Stoneware Clay contains molochite, an extremely fine (200-mesh) porcelain grog
to enhance the throwing capabilities of this clay. In oxidation the color is a
warm, nearly perfect white at Cone 6, shown on the left, and a very soft cool
gray at Cone 10, as shown in the middle. In reduction the clay is a warm light
gray at Cone 10, as shown on the right. Standard's S-181 White Stoneware Clay is
popular with potters and artists that require a smooth surface for carving or
decorating with underglazes. Standard's S-240 White Stoneware is a better
throwing clay than S-181 as the S-240 contains fire clay to add the texture or
tooth to a clay that is often desirable in a throwing clay body.

introduced by Standard. S-211 Hazelnut is a nice plastic clay for throwing and
handbuilding. At Cone 6 oxidation, it is a warm rich brown color usually
associated with reduction firing. The noticeable speckling is due to presence of
fine grained fire clay which, when combined with 4% fine grog, increases the wet
strength of the clay, thus allowing larger pieces to be thrown.

brown. The color becomes less warm, and deepens and darkens to nearly a medium

S910 Self Hardening Clay (do not fire)
Standard Clay's S-910 Self-Hardening Clay, also known as Standard's S910 Air
Dried Clay, is perfect for non-fired clay techniques and is the ideal clay for
the classroom or recreation program that does not have access to a kiln. Self
Hardening Clay dries upon exposure to air and will harden without firing. The

non-fired color products. The standard color is white and may also be advanced
ordered in grey and red color.
Best Selling Clay
Suggested uses for Self-Hardening/Air-Dried Clay:
Retirement homes, hospitals and rehabilitation centers working with the elder
and stroke patients to gain hand strength. Air Dried Clay can be formed,
reformed and may be possible to save in an airtight container for additional
work.
Kindergartens, Elementary and Middle Schools for earth day projects and basic
art projects. Standard Clay's Air Dried Clay allows a large number of students
to perform a clay project without the need to kiln fire all of those pieces.
Remember the clay will harden when exposed to air and can be painted with
acrylics.
Science Fair projects. Yes, those classic volcanoes can be made out of Air Dried
Clay.
Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts projects. Air Dried Clay will generally not meet the
requirements of pottery or ceramic merit badges as the clay can not be kiln
fired or decorated with glazes. At the same time, Air Dried Clay is perfect for
Brownies and Cub Scout projects.
The drying time is dependant upon the size of the piece, ambient temperature and
air movement. The George Ohr Museum plans on most pinch pots or small coil pots
hardening in 24 hours, which is perfect for their Summer Camp projects. Larger
(thicker) pieces may take 48-72 hours to completely dry.
Please note, Standard Ceramic Supply, the manufacturer of Standard Clay,
suggests the shelf life of S-910 Air Dried Clay to be limited to 6 months due to
the risk of air exposure. However, Gulfport Bayou View Middle School and Central
Middle School hold over the excess S-910 Air Dried Clay from their annual Earth
Day event to the next school year's event with little problem.
Dogwood Ceramic Supply has stocking capacity to handle over 150,000 lbs of
Standard's Moist Clay in our warehouse for immediate pickup or shipping to the
