Standard S-103 Red Clay (Cone 06-2)

Standard Clay's S-103 Red Clay is a very smooth, low fire, plastic, terra-cotta body, without the addition of grog or coarse clays. Standard S-103 Red Clay is an excellent for the classroom, and may be used in a variety of techniques, though throwing with the clay is rather limited due to the smooth consistency. In oxidation firing the clay is a traditional terra-cotta color at Cone 06, and a very deep brick red at cone 2.     Standard Clay's S-104 Red Clay with Grog is a moderately textured, versatile low fire clay with 12% fine grog and an extended firing range. S112 Speckled Brown Stoneware Clay (Cone 4-6)

Standard Clay's S-112 Speckled Brown Stoneware Clay is a lightly textured, plastic clay with 4% fine grog that is excellent for throwing and modeling. Suggested uses for Self-Hardening/Air-Dried Clay:

Retirement homes, hospitals and rehabilitation centers working with the elder and stroke patients to gain hand strength. Air Dried Clay can be formed, reformed and may be possible to save in an airtight container for additional work.

Kindergartens, Elementary and Middle Schools for earth day projects and basic art projects. Standard Clay's Air Dried Clay allows a large number of students to perform a clay project without the need to kiln fire all of those pieces. Remember the clay will harden when exposed to air and can be painted with acrylics.

Science Fair projects. Yes, those classic volcanoes can be made out of Air Dried Clay.

Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts projects. Air Dried Clay will generally not meet the requirements of pottery or ceramic merit badges as the clay can not be kiln fired or decorated with glazes. At the same time, Air Dried Clay is perfect for Brownies and Cub Scout projects.

The drying time is dependant upon the size of the piece, ambient temperature and air movement. The George Ohr Museum plans on most pinch pots or small coil pots hardening in 24 hours, which is perfect for their Summer Camp projects. Larger (thicker) pieces may take 48-72 hours to completely dry.

Please note, Standard Ceramic Supply, the manufacturer of Standard Clay, suggests the shelf life of S-910 Air Dried Clay to be limited to 6 months due to the risk of air exposure. However, Gulfport Bayou View Middle School and Central Middle School hold over the excess S-910 Air Dried Clay from their annual Earth Day event to the next school year's event with little problem.
