Wagon Wheel Molds

(Press Molds)

Press Molds, also known as sprig molds, are one piece clay molds or pottery molds which are highly detailed plaster molds with many uses for potters, ceramists and clay jewelry artists.

Using a Press Molds is quite simple.  Clay is depressed into the mold and the exposed clay is smoothed flat.  The absorbent plaster will evenly draw moisture from the clay body to limit cracking and sticking. When the clay in the mold has dried to the leather hard stage, the design is removed for further drying and/or attaching to other clay objects.

The entire line of Wagon Wheel Molds were designed as press or sprig molds specifically for use with clay as pottery molds. The depth of the design is perfect for adding the sprig (design) unto thrown or molded clay shapes, or for use as clay jewelry.  Dogwood Ceramic Supply typically stocks the Wagon Wheel molds listed on this web page, though actual inventory may vary.

All Wagon Wheel Press Molds are manufactured using USG #1 Pottery Plaster for strength and durability.

What is (what are) Fleur-de-lis?  The simplest definition is a stylized lily flower, typically thought of as representing the Holy Trinity, the Fleur-de-lis is found in architecture, religious art, family crests and even used for military purposes. The Fleur-de-lis is most commonly associated with the French (hence the origins of the name) since the early middle ages, but the Fleur-de-lis was also adopted for use by the English, Scottish and Spanish. Today the Fleur-de-lis has lost much of the religious connections and historical references and is common across many groups and organizations. For example many Scouting groups use the Fleur-de-lis as their primary emblem or the Fleur is found on compasses and maps to indicate North. In more practical use, the Fleur-de-lis is used to decorate iron fencing such that the decoration also serves to finish the ends (finials) of the metal work and provide a decorative deterrent to intruders.

The Fleur-de-lis has a strong regional appeal, much in part because the French settled the area that today is known as Louisiana and the Fleur-de-lis was adopted by many Louisiana State organizations and professional sporting teams.

Modern Ceramists and Potters have adopted the Fleur-de-lis for use on just about anything.... vases, plates, bowls, cups, jewelry or even Christmas Ornaments.  Because of the huge popularity of the Fleur-de-lis, Dogwood Ceramic Supply maintains an extensive selection of Fleur-de-lis molds in stock at all times.
