Additional Airplane Information: Boeing 717, based on the classic DC-9 airframe and launched as the McDonnell Douglas MD-95 in 1995, the short range jet was renamed the Boeing 717 after McDonnell Douglas and Boeing merged in the 1997. The Boeing 717 was last produced in 2006. The Boeing 717 serves short to medium routes. Boeing 737 family of airplanes were designed by Boeing to compete against McDonnell Douglas and Airbus products in the highly competitive short to medium range markets. The Boeing 737 has done more than compete. The Boeing 737 is the best selling airplane with the world with over 6,000 airplanes based upon the 737 design having been sold by Boeing. McDonnell Douglas MD-88 was introduced by McDonnell Douglas in the 1980's as part of the MD-80 series of planes to replace the venerable DC-9 and compete against the Boeing 737. Boeing continued the MD-88 program for a few years after Boeing acquired McDonnell Douglas. Bombardier, a Canadian company that owns the Learjet and de Havilland brands of small planes, produces a number of short to medium range jets typically holding 40 to 90 passengers. Bombardier acquired Canadair in 1986 and uses the Canadair name on their passenger jets. The Bombardier CRJ series of planes are modern designed jet airplanes that can readily compete with the Boeing 737 family of planes in terms of range, cruising speeds and ceiling limits. Embraer is currently the third largest producer of commercial airplanes being Boeing and Airbus. Embraer produces a number of short to medium range jets, typically holding 40 to over 120 passengers. Like Bombardier's Canadair jets, the Embraer jets can readily compete with the Boeing 737 family of planes in terms of range, cruising speeds and ceiling limits.
Please note: NONE of the commercial airlines servicing the Gulfport-Biloxi International Airport use prop or turbo-prop aircraft.
