Price Adjustment for 2008

As previously announced, Dal Tile, a subsidiary of Mohawk Industries, had announced a 5% price increase effective January 01, 2008 on their unglazed ceramic bisque tile.  At the time of the announcement Dogwood Ceramic Supply had just received a shipment of tile and projected that we would have sufficient quantity of tile in stock to last for several months.  We planned to hold product prices at 2007 levels until late winter or early spring at which time we would adjust the price of unglazed ceramic bisque tile to include rising fuel and freight costs.

On March 11th the Dal Tile division from whom Dogwood Ceramic Supply purchases our tile products announced an immediate price adjustment in the price of unglazed ceramic bisque tile.  This immediate price adjustment was due internal pricing problems of specific products and between the various divisions and subsidiaries of Mohawk.  Needless to say the changes were dramatic with 4 x 4 tiles increasing nearly 40%.  Fortunately 6 x 6 tiles were only being increased by 12%.  Both of these increases are on top of the January 01, 2008 price increase.

Dogwood Ceramic Supply has another shipment of unglazed ceramic bisque tile arriving in early April.  The prices on the website have been updated to current rates.

And before we forget, inbound freight costs in the 4 months since we purchased our last shipment of tile have increased exactly $30 per pallet.

Excerpts from the Gare Distributor Newsletter, February 29, 2008:

"Dear Distributor:
As you may be aware, there has been a lot of publicity in our industry this week regarding leaded glazes.  In summary, a local news station in Connecticut went undercover, visiting 5 studios in the area, and taking their own “swab tests” to test for lead.  Three of the five studios received test results that were above the recommended levels for lead....

Gare has been very proactive with our direct customers in promoting a switch over to [nontoxic glaze]....our ultimate goal is to switch over everyone.

Dogwood Comment:
The TV station referenced above is WFSB, the investigative report is titled "Tests Show Lead at Paint-Your-Own Pottery Shops".

Mardi Gras Parades:

Mardi Gras is EARLY this year.  While many of the Mardi Gras Parades have been scaled back since Hurricane Katrina, South Mississippi is still going to have our Mardi Gras Parades to bring enjoyment to the local communities.

As with previous years Parades, getting stuck in the traffic around a parade is a bad experience.  Gulfport is having 3 parades this year.  Two of the Parades can cause some traffic problems for visitors to Dogwood Ceramic Supply.

On Saturday January 26th, the Orange Grove Carnival Association's Parade will be held on the western end of Dedeaux Road, AND parts of US Hwy 49.  The parade starts at 2PM.  As with the Krewe of Kids, it is recommended that every body use Lorraine Road to access the eastern end of Dedeaux Road.  Refer to the local map.  The directions from the Lorraine Road exit of I-10 are listed for customers coming from the east.  Three Rivers Road will be open for local traffic, but can be slow moving.  For customers coming from the north, please call and we will give you directions to bypass the Hwy 49 traffic.

Saturday February 4th, Gulfport's Krewe of Kids will parade at the western end of Dedeaux Road.  The parade starts at 2PM.  It is recommended that every body use Lorraine Road to access the eastern end of Dedeaux Road.  Refer to the local map.  The directions from the Lorraine Road exit of I-10 are listed for customers coming from the east.  Local traffic can still use Three Rivers Road to access Dedeaux Road with no restrictions.  Notice: this a date change due to inclement weather.

Price Adjustment for 2008

Dogwood Ceramic Supply has received notice of an uniform price increase of 5% on Daltile products, including unglazed ceramic bisque tiles and refractories effective January 01, 2008.

Dogwood comment:   Dogwood Ceramic Supply has adequate inventory of Daltile products in stock to hold the prices at the 2007 level for several months.  We anticipate applying the Daltile increase sometime in late winter or early spring, most likely March 01, 2008.  Please be advised that freight prices, including fuel surcharges, continue to rapidly rise and it will be necessary to adjust for freight costs at the same time.

Gare Announcement

Direct from the Gare distributor newsletter:

"   We will be having a price increase effective January 2, 2008 on our entire range of color products.
The increase on most color products will be in the range between 4-5%.  We will however have a significant increase on our line of leaded products, including our 1700 Clear Dipping Glaze for a variety of reasons:
  • Lead has increased significantly in price.  Since January of 2007 it has increased 130% and since 2005 in has increased 290%
  • Concerning 1700 Clear Glaze Specifically, Clear Glaze has been a "loss leader" over the years with extremely low margins.  Given the weight of this product and the increases in freight and other costs, we need to price this product more in line with other color products.
  • With prices overall lower with our non toxic line, we would like to encourage all of our customers to go to our non toxic glazes (NTG's) including our 9000D Clear Dipping Glaze.
Also we have decided to discontinue our production of all non-fired products such that we can focus our efforts on those segments of the fired lines that continue to grow."

Foam Price Increase Announcement, May 1, 2008

Dogwood Ceramic Supply has received a price announcement from our manufacturer of EPS (expanded polystyrene) sheets and peanuts used for UPS and motor freight packing material.  This price increase is related to the instability of supply of benzene and the ratcheting up of benzene prices worldwide and is the 3rd price increase in EPS raw materials in the past 6 months.  Benzene, a petrochemical byproduct, makes up the bulk of the chemical process which results in production of EPS beads which are expanded to make EPS foam products.  The market price of Benzene is not only related to the supply and demand of Benzene but also the market price of oil.
Dogwood Ceramic Supply is currently reviewing the impact of these price increases and will make an appropriate adjustment to our packing charges effective June 1, 2007.  Please be advised that a number of ceramic mold and equipment manufacturers across the Southeast and Midwest  also purchase EPS products from the same manufacturer and will be similarly adversely affected.

Lehman Equipment Announcement, February 2007

Lehman Equipment has announced that an ownership change has already taken place.  The new owners of the company will continue the company with some modifications.  Due to changes in the mold casting industry, the decision has been made to reduce the number of models offered.  However, replacement parts for all the machines are still available.  Inventory levels of finished goods will be reduced, but components parts will be kept to help achieve an efficient manufacturing process.
The last full price adjustment (parts and equipment) was in 1993.  The entire line of parts and equipment was evaluated and appropriate price adjustments have been made.  The new prices are in effect as March 1, 2007.
Dogwood Ceramic Supply has a limited stock of discontinued Lehman equipment items in our warehouse and showroom.

Lorraine Road Improvements:

Cowan-Lorraine Road has been upgraded.   The upgraded Cowan-Lorraine Road has been designated as Mississippi Highway 605.  Highway 605 is a high speed limited divided highway running from I-10 northward to Mississippi Highway 67.  The first traffic light-interchange north of I-10 is Dedeaux Rd (for quick access to Dogwood Ceramic Supply).

Construction on Highway 605 was completed in December 2006.  Gulfport's First Baptist Church, which was destroyed in Hurricane Katrina, has already purchased land for their future location on Hwy 605.  First Presbyterian Church of Gulfport will also relocate from the beach to Hwy 605.  The highway will provide direct access to St. Patrick Catholic High School (to open Fall 2007) near the Hwy 605-Hwy 67 interchange.  St. Patrick will replace Mercy Cross and St. John's High Schools.
