Paragon Iguana Kiln

The Little Front Loading Pottery Kiln

The Paragon Iguana is the small front loading pottery kiln by Paragon

List Price $3,130.00

Dogwood Ceramic Supply's Discounted Price $2,160.00

Based upon the design of the Paragon Dragon, the Paragon Iguana Kiln is a moderate sized front loading, high performance pottery kiln designed for ease of loading sculpture and other other items that may be difficult to load in a traditional top loading kiln, such as the similarly sized TnF 82-3.  Designed with more than enough power to reach Cone 10, the Paragon Iguana is becoming very popular with potters that need the ease of a front loading kiln, yet are not ready to purchase the much larger Dragon or Super Dragon.

Because the Paragon Iguana is smaller than the Dragon, modifying the kiln is much easier (and cheaper), allowing the Iguana to become a truly multipurpose kiln for customers needing a broad firing range.  Even a guillotine door is possible for industrial applications.

Notes:

$3,130.00 is the Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price for the Paragon Iguana. Dogwood Ceramic Supply's discounted price is $2,160.00. All options have the appropriate discounts applied from the MSRP.

Freight charges are based upon the weight of the kiln, services required and the customer's location. Please refer to Paragon freight information for complete information including special rates and any adjustments to the basic freight charges for your specific location or delivery situation. The standard freight charges includes the furniture kit and most common accessories that may be added to the purchase of the Paragon Iguana.

Options Explained:

Kiln Furniture Kit

Kiln Stand:

The Iguana (shown above) is mounted in a 24" stand.  The stand is optional as the ventilated mounting base (the area below the brick bottom of the kiln with vertical slits) could allow the kiln to be safely used on a work table that is capable of holding a 375 lb kiln.  Most customers will chose to add a stand.  The kiln will be mounted in the stand, unless the customer requests otherwise.  With the 22" Stand, the floor of the Paragon Iguana will be 34½" above ground level.  Adding the optional casters will not change the lift height of the kiln floor.

The casters on the Paragon Iguana stand DO NOT lock.  For safety of the kiln and the customer using the kiln a stand with casters should be purchased only if you will have a regular need to move the kiln, OR require the casters to move the kiln into a basement or interior room.

Orton Vent Master:
See Orton Kiln Vent for general product information.  The Orton Kiln Vent requires an unusual connection for use with the Paragon Iguana.  The prices listed above include the cost of installing the Orton Kiln Vent to the Iguana.

The AOP is mounted into the control box of the kiln.  See Auxiliary Output (AOP) for product information.

APM Elements

Door Element:
As with the 3 Zone Control, not every customer will have the need for a Door Element to be installed on their new Paragon Iguana Kiln.  In the standard Iguana configuration the elements wrap around the side walls and back of the kiln chamber.  As one would anticipate, the door area is the natural cold spot within the kiln.  However, the relatively small surface area of the door does not create the cold spot problems typically found in the larger kilns.  So, like the 3 Zone Control mentioned above, the door element is typically a waste of money for the vast majority of all customers.

The addition of Door Elements does not reduce or increase the amount of power consumption of the Paragon Iguana and will not affect the firing time of the kiln.  The Door Elements simply cause the power to be redistributed to compensate for the natural cold spot of the kiln which may affect certain firing conditions.

Door Safety Switch:

The optional door safety switch is required with all Paragon Iguana Kilns that are sold with the Door Element and should be purchased by other users if the door will opened at any time during the firing stages.

Stainless Steel Exterior:

The standard Iguana has a painted metal exterior surface.  For the majority of kilns sold by Dogwood Ceramic Supply, the painted metal surface will not rust for many, many years.  However, humidity in the air, moisture in the clays that are fired, metallic salts in the glazes that are used and the presence of salt in the air from being close to the seashore all combine to quickly attack the painted steel exterior of the kiln.

Paragon added the Stainless Steel Exterior as an option to the Iguana, primarily for those customers living on an island or close to the ocean.  If you are located more than 10 miles from the seashore, fire dry clay only, use high quality commercial glazes and the kiln is located in a temperature regulated (HVAC) room there is little need to upgrade to the Stainless Steel Exterior.  But if you are really close to the seashore, always fire wet ware or corrosive glazes you may want to upgrade to the Stainless Steel Exterior.

Please note: Dogwood Ceramic Supply is located 6 miles from the Mississippi Sound.  Our Dragon (the big brother of the Iguana) is located in our warehouse and is vented with an Orton downdraft kiln vent and after over 10 years of continual usage firing commercial glazes and "dry" greenware there is significant rust is showing on the edges of the painted steel case.

Dogwood's recommendation: Buy the Stainless Steel Exterior if you are close to any saltwater bay, inlet, or ocean.  For everybody else, buy some nice glazes and have some fun with the money you just saved.
