Paragon Pearl Kilns for Glass

Paragon Pearl Kilns for Glass

Paragon's popular Pearl Kilns for Glass range in size from table top units to some of the largest catalog standard glass kilns made by Paragon.  Regardless of the kiln size, the Paragon Pearl Kilns have one common feature that distinguishes these kilns from other glass kilns... a hinged lid that looks and operates much like a clamshell to reveal the fired glass projects within the kiln chamber.

The clamshell feature of the Paragon Pearl Glass Kilns is important as the design allows easy loading and assembly of glass projects at or near eye level of the user within the kiln chamber from the front and sides of the kiln while the voluminous top section will retain heat during firing stages when the kiln chamber is opened for working with the hot glass.

Paragon Pearl Kilns are available in 4 models:  The Paragon Pearl 18 and Pearl 22 are table top models for the home studio or classroom.  The Paragon Pearl 44 is exactly double the size of the Pearl 22 in length and is mounted in a stand to make the kiln free standing.  The Pearl 56 is Paragon's ultimate clamshell glass kiln.

Paragon's Ultimate Clamshell Glass Kiln

Paragon Pearl 56 Clamshell Kiln for Glass

List Price $12,100.00

Dogwood Ceramic Supply's Discounted Price $7,920.00

Dogwood Ceramic Supply can't lay claim to the design of the Paragon Pearl-56 as this monster of a glass kiln was designed by Bullseye Glass to be the ultimate glass kiln.  From Dogwood Ceramic Supply's perspective we think they succeeded.

The Paragon Pearl 56 is 56" wide, hence the model name, 30" deep (front to back) and 16½" high.  The clamshell is uniquely designed so that the lower chamber walls are only 4½" above the kiln floor and 29" above the floor (ground) to yield great access for ease of assembly delicate glass projects within the kiln chamber.  The upper chamber has two vents on the top and two peepholes on the front wall.  Those peepholes are not the ordinary peephole found on other kilns as these peepholes are 2" by 3" rectangles to allow better viewing access to the kiln chamber.  The peephole plugs are actually made from firebrick so that the plugs can be handled with standard high temperature gloves.  The vents on the top are the same size as the peepholes and come equipped with hinged door covers and high temperature abrasion-resistant gaskets.  The bottom of the kiln chamber is standard insulating firebrick (IFB) while the top chamber is composed entirely of 3" ceramic fiber.  Ceramic Fiber in the upper chamber prevents the kiln brick dust issues with less expensive kilns and the Ceramic Fiber has been grooved to accept replaceable elements.  The top chamber actually sits inside of a temperature resistant gasket mounted in the lower chamber wall and dual air pistons assist with the opening and closing of the top chamber. And then this entire brick and fiber chamber is then mounted into a welded 2" tubular steel frame with a storage shelf under the kiln chamber.  At this point the kiln weighs approximately 1400 lbs. so of course the kiln is equipment with high capacity casters for ease of moving.  When the kiln is located in its proper home the 4 four leveling feet should be engaged to level the floor of the kiln chamber and to prevent the kiln from moving on the casters.

Sounds Serious? Just wait, there is more!

The Pearl-56 Kiln chamber is essentially all element.  There are elements mounted in the chamber top as well as the walls and floor of the kiln chamber.  As would be expected the top and bottom elements can be independently controlled in 5% increments via 20 present positions programmed into the Sentry 2.0 Digital Controller.  The top and floor elements are also mounted in an element groove that is smaller than the element to prevent element sagging and bulging issues.  Mercury relays are standard on this kiln due to the reliability of the Mercury Relays and because standard mechanical relays can not handle the power distribution needed for a powerful kiln of this size.  The control panel is mounted on the right hand side of the kiln and is angled for comfortable operation of the digital controller.  And of course the Pearl-56 is equipped with a lid safety switch so the kiln owner can work with the hot glass while the kiln is firing.

Did Bullseye forget anything in this kiln? We don't think so.

The Clamshell Coffin Kiln by Paragon

Paragon Pearl 44 Kiln for Glass

List Price $6,690.00

Dogwood Ceramic Supply's Discounted Price $4,520.00

Clamshell kilns get their name from the kiln design that looks like a clamshell, often with a chamber cavity to retain the kiln heat while the kiln is open.  Coffin kilns are elongated rectangles that accommodate lengthy pieces or several projects to be fired simultaneously.  A clamshell and a coffin kiln all in one?  Well that would be the Paragon Pearl-44 Kiln.  The Paragon Pearl-44 is essentially two Paragon Pearl-22 kilns situated side by side mounted in a kiln stand on steroids.  And while we are mentioning steroids, let's not forget the independent element controls from the Paragon GL-24ADTSD and Pearl 56 that allow the user to change the element power ratios in 5% increments via 20 present positions programmed into the Orton Sentry 2.0 Controller.

As much as the Pearl-44 is like the Pearl-22, the Pearl-44 is also quite different.  For starters the Pearl-44 uses 3" Ceramic Fiber in the top section as standard equipment.  The use of Ceramic Fiber makes the lid unit lighter than what it would be if standard kiln brick had been used AND prevents element sagging issues and prevents many of the brick dust issues with kiln bricks in lids of kilns.  The Pearl-44 also includes expansion joints built into the wall bricks to allow for expansion during heating of the kiln and to improve the life of the wall bricks.  And we would be negligent if we failed to mention the heavy gauge 3" tubular steel kiln stand that can accept casters for ease of moving the heavy kiln.

For all the differences, the Paragon Pearl-44 has the same basic design features of the Pearl-22, including the clamshell design that allows for easy loading and assembly of glass projects at the eye level of the user inside the kiln chamber.  The voluminous top section will retain heat during firing stages when the kiln is open for working with the hot glass and the added sidewall element will help to reheat the chamber to restore any heat that was lost while the kiln was open.  The Pearl-44 chamber size (44" x 22" x 13") is big enough to handle larger sheets of glass or handle many smaller projects side by side.  And the Pearl-44 includes a lid safety switch to shut down power to the exposed elements whenever the kiln chamber is opened.

Paragon Pearl 44 Glass Kiln Standard Features:
◊ Glass Kiln, 1700°F maximum temperature.
◊ 7.28 cubic foot interior: 44" wide x 22" deep (front to back) x 13" tall
◊ 3" insulating firebrick on walls and bottom.
◊ 3" Ceramic Fiber on lid with replaceable elements
◊ Dual air piston assist for the clamshell lid.
◊ Proportional power elements for even heating
◊ Independent control of the elements through the Sentry Digital Controller.
◊ Sentry 2.0 12-Key Digital Controller with programmed cool-down and full range of programmable firing options
◊ Digital Controller warranted for 30 months.
◊ 11,500 watts of power.  Requires #6 wire, NEMA 6-50R receptacle, 60 amp circuit breaker.
◊ Long-lasting mercury relays (MDR) UL/CUL & NEC compliant fuses for safety
◊ Single Zone K Type Thermocouple temperature sensor and control
◊ Available in 200, 208, 220, 240, 480v, 1 & 3 phase power options
◊ Doorway clearance is 33".
◊ Shipping weight 930 lbs.

◊ Furniture Kit #2 (new style):
1 - 42" long x 20" wide x 1 1/2" thick rigid ceramic fiber shelf
3 - 18" long, 1 1/2" wide square posts
shipping weight: 50 lbs
only available with new kiln purchases
Shipped within the kiln crate for added protection during shipping.
◊ Casters with Leveling Feet

The Rigid Fiber Furniture Kit is made of a light-weight ceramic fiber that has been rigidized and planed flat.  The kiln shelf is to remain in the kiln between firings as excessive handling will degrade the shelf.  Ceramic Fiber is quick to dissipate heat, especially the light density material used to manufacturer this kiln shelf.  Since the fiber shelf does not store heat like conventional cordierite kiln shelves, the shelf can cool faster than the glass and as such crash cooling the kiln can result in thermoshock issues with the glass.

Clamshell Perfection for Glass

Paragon Pearl 22 Clamshell Kiln for glass

List Price $2,650.00

Dogwood Ceramic Supply's Discounted Price $1,840.00

The Paragon Pearl-22 is the perfect clamshell glass kiln for the small professional studio or the classroom.  The Pearl 22 is exactly half the interior width of the Paragon Pearl-44, but gives up little to the Pearl 44 or the Pearl 56 in terms of professional features such as the Sentry 2.0 12-Key Digital Controller and Mercury Displacement Relays (MDR) to distribute power within the kiln.  However, unlike the bigger brothers, the Paragon Pearl 22 was designed for use as a table top kiln, similar to the smaller Pearl 18.

Like all of the Pearl kilns, the clamshell design of the Paragon Pearl-22 Kiln allows for easy loading and assembly of glass projects at the eye level of the user inside the kiln chamber with access from 3 sides.  To facilitate the ease of access from 3 sides, the Paragon Pearl 22 includes air pistons mounted close to the rear of the kiln to assist with lifting the heavy lid without disturbing glass projects within the kiln as well as allowing the user better access to projects loaded near the rear of the kiln.  The voluminous top section will retain heat during firing stages when the kiln is open for working with the hot glass, while the added sidewall element in the top section of the Pearl 22 will help to reheat the chamber to restore any heat that was lost while the kiln was open. Paragon's optional ceramic fiber top with replaceable element eliminates issues related to kiln brick dust falling from the large top surface.

The Paragon Pearl-22 Kiln has a 22" x 22" x 13" chamber size that is big enough to handle large glass projects or several smaller projects.  The top of the Pearl-22 can be clamped down during firing or for ease of the moving the kiln.  The elements are mounted in narrow element grooves that eliminates sagging elements and the need to pin elements in place OR the elements can be mounted in ceramic fiber to improve kiln interior hygiene.  The Paragon Pearl-22 includes, as standard equipment, a lid safety switch to shut down power to the exposed elements whenever the kiln chamber is opened plus a built-in louvered stand that allows the kiln to be operated from virtually any worktable.
