Paragon's High Performance Viking Kilns

High Performance Paragon Viking Kilns for Pottery

More power than what you will ever need !

The Viking Series of Kilns by Paragon are the highest performance top loading pottery kilns made by Paragon.  There are 3 kilns in the series.  The big bad boy, the Paragon Viking 28, and the tall-skinny Paragon Viking 24, were the first two kilns in the Viking series.  The Viking 28 and Viking 24 are identical in size and basic features as their twin sisters the TnF 28-3 or TnF 24-3.  Well, identical in every way except for the massive boost in power common to every Paragon Viking Kiln.  In 2010 the original two Viking Kilns were joined by an over-powered Short and Wide Paragon Viking 27.  Each of these Paragon Viking Kilns draws 14,400 watts of power.  Compared to the 11,500 watts of power being drawn by their less powerful brethren, the Viking Kilns draw 25% more power.  More power means the Viking Kilns will reach Cone 10 easier.  More power also means the elements in the Viking Kilns will last longer because the elements do not have to work as hard with each firing.

While more power is wonderful, it does come at a cost, both in terms of the cost of the kiln and the cost of installation for the kiln.  The traditional Paragon TnF-27-3 is the most powerful kiln that can connect to a 60 amp circuit breaker utilizing a 6-50 power cord and receptacle.  When the power levels are bumped up above the levels of the TnF 27-3 the kiln must be direct wired.  14,400 watts being drawn by each of the Viking Kilns is a big bump up in the power consumption so obviously direct wiring is required.  70 amp circuit breakers are also required.  The 70 amp circuit breaker and direct wiring requirements for the Viking Kilns may substantially increase the cost of the electrical installation and may, in some instances, even prevent installation in some schools or studios.

Internally the Viking Kilns use UL/CUL & NEC compliant high amperage internal fuses and Mercury Displacement Relays (MDR) for power distribution, the same internal equipment used on the Paragon Dragon.  The MDRs are required because the conventional mechanical relays can not handle the high amperage of the Viking Kilns.  The internal fuses are also required because of the high amperage of the kiln.

Beyond the increased cost of the kiln and electrical installation, the Viking Kilns DO NOT cost more to operate.  Yes, the kilns draw more power when the elements are operating, but the percentage of time the elements will operate is less than the amount of time for a less powerful kilns.  More power drawn.  Less time on.  Same operating costs.

So who should buy the Viking Kilns?  Fire to Cone 10 on every firing?  Fire to Cone 6 every day?  Fire heavily loaded kilns every day?  Sounds like you are a good candidate for a Viking Kiln.  The upfront cost of the Viking Kilns will be offset by fewer element changes and less down time.  Hobbyist?  Casual user?  Once per month kiln loads?  Skip the Viking Kilns and buy one of the comparable Paragon TnF series kilns.

High Performance Paragon Viking Kilns for Pottery and Ceramics

When comparing the Paragon Viking Kilns always remember the lift-over height of the top edge of the kiln.  The top of the wall bricks are 41.5" above ground for the Paragon Viking 28 and Viking 24 while the Viking 27 is only 34.5" above ground level.  The easy to load height of the Viking 27 is preferable for many customers.

Notes:

The Paragon Viking Kilns are popular for pickup at the Dogwood Ceramic Supply Showroom and Warehouse.  Please make note of the shipping crates listed with each kiln.  The shipping crate is especially important for the Viking 28 and Viking 27 as these wider kilns may not fit in the bed of a small pickup truck, especially if a bed liner has been installed.

Kiln customers who are unable to install a direct wire kiln, such as the Paragon Viking Kilns, should consider the slightly less powerful TnF Kilns, such as the TnF 27-3.  The TnF Kilns are capable of reaching Cone 10, though the kilns are not designed for continuous Cone 10 usage.

Kiln customers seeking to "do" a bit of glass with their ceramics, pottery or porcelain should consider the Paragon Janus Kilns as an alternative to the Paragon Viking Kilns.

All options have the appropriate discounts applied from the MSRP.

Freight charges are based upon the weight of the kiln, services required and the customer's location. Please refer to Paragon freight information for complete information including special rates and any adjustments to the basic freight charges for your specific location or delivery situation.

The Paragon Factory Freight Free Program applies to purchases of 2 or more Paragon Viking Kilns for commercial or school delivery with loading dock.  Additional charges for standard adjustments including liftgate may apply.
