Additional Paragon Kiln Options
Every Paragon Kiln comes complete, ready to fire! But there are several special options that should be considered or may even be required.
Orton Kiln Vent
![]() |
The Orton downdraft
Vent Master is designed to remove noxious gases from a kiln during
firing and exhausts the gases from the room. Dogwood Ceramic Supply keeps the Orton Vent Master in
stock in 208-240v electrical configuration for use with Paragon Kilns equipped
with the optional Auxiliary Output (AOP). 110v operated Vent Masters are also stocked for retrofitting older kilns not equipped with an AOP. Please refer to Dogwood's Orton Kiln Vent webpage for complete product information. |
AOP
| The “Auxiliary Output” is available on most Paragon kilns. The Auxiliary Output
(AOP for short) is a factory installed relay-powered electrical receptacle mounted to the kiln control panel that allows the kiln to
provide electrical power to the Orton Kiln Vent as well as control when the vent operates during firing
thru the digital controller. The use of the AOP allows the Vent Master to operate in
the most energy efficient and optimum mode for each type of firing. Please note, the Orton Kiln Vent can be easily retrofitted to a kiln after purchase, but the AOP is only available as a factory installed option. |

Lid Safety Switch
![]() |
The Lid Safety Switch (also known as the Door Safety Switch) is a fluid filled rocker switch mounted to the hinge assembly of the kiln lid or door that instantly shuts off power to all elements in the kiln whenever the kiln lid or door is opened while leaving the digital controller fully powered and programmed and ready to resume the proper firing after the lid has been closed. The lid safety switch is standard on professional glass kilns with elements in the lid or door. The lid safety switch is required whenever door elements are added to any pottery kiln and is optional on all other Paragon pottery or glass kilns. $70 upgrade price. Very important to glass customers, borosilicate glass can conduct electricity as glass approaches the molten state and if raking techniques will performed the kiln should be equipped with a Lid Safety Switch. |
| The lid/door safety switch is required on all kilns exported to the UK regardless of kiln design or usage. Other countries may also adopted the strict UK safety rules. All export customers should check with their respective electrical code enforcement officials before ordering a kiln from the USA. |
1" x 3" Glass Window
![]() |
The optional 1” x 3” high-temperature glass window allows user to view kiln chamber while the kiln firing. Users should wear appropriate safety glasses when viewing the glowing kiln interior. Available on select kilns. Size and placement vary according to the kiln, but the 1" x 3" size is most common and the window is always installed into the area normally used for the peep hole on the kiln. Maximum temperature varies, typically 2000˚F. The Window can reduce the maximum temperature or the efficiency of the kiln. The usefulness (or lack thereof) of the window is dependant upon the angle of the user's view, placement of the kiln shelf within the kiln and the size of the kiln chamber. Because of the angle of view, kiln shelf and chamber size issues, a window is far more useful in a small kiln, such as the Silver Clay Kilns, than a large kiln and as such Dogwood Ceramic Supply strongly discourages the purchase of the optional Glass Window for the many large kilns we sell as it is often a wasted expenditure. |
Orton Witness Cones
As accurate as the Sentry 2.0 is, there still is chance that the thermocouple (temperature probe) may need recalibration from drifting with age, or another error. Orton Self Supporting Witness Cones should be used with every firing, as a double check on the operation of the kiln. Much like using a toothpick to check a cake coming from the oven, Orton Self Supporting Witness Cones are just a double check to insure that everything is done to your satisfaction.
