Sio-2 Clays by Ceramica Collet

Manufactured in Spain by Ceramica Collet, Sio-2 Clays provide a variety of traditional earthenware, stoneware, specialty and porcelain clays for the potter, sculptor and ceramists.  Nearly all the clays (with the exception of the porcelains) are available in the extruded (moist) form in 12.5kg (27.8 lb) foodgrade heat-shrinked easy to stack and handle packaging.  The porcelain clays are available in extruded (moist) form in 5 kg (11 lb) cylindrical extrusions that are easy to handle and double bagged for long shelflife.  All Sio-2 Clays are certified non-toxic by the Arts and Crafts Material Institute (ACMI) and labeled in compliance with ASTM D-4236 and the Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) are provided at the bottom of the page.

Dogwood Ceramic Supply has actual fired clay samples on display in our showroom and on this web site. All of the clay samples have been fired in oxidation in an electric kiln to a range of cone values.  The color tiles shown below include 3 different temperatures (Cone values) to demonstrate the color transition as one fires hotter.  All tiles are fired in oxidation (electric) kilns.

Dogwood Ceramic Supply Notes

Super Fine Cake Flour is typically 50 mesh, which is larger in particle size than 80 mesh.

Many of Ceramica Collet Clays are manufacturered differently than domestic clays and include high percentages of grog to increase the wet strength of the clay and to offset the fine grained clays common to Spain.  Domestic clay manufacturers typically use a mix of coarser clays and/or larger sized grog to achieve the same wet strength.

Domestic clay manufacturers report total shrinkage rates.  Ceramica Collet reports both dry shrinkage (from wet to dry greenware) as well as fired to maturity shrinkage.  To compare to Domestic shrinkage rates, combine the wet and fired shrinkage rates.

History of Ceramica Collet

CERAMICA COLLET started in 1874, in L’Hospitalet de Llobregat (Barcelona), and consisted in the manufacture of tiles and other special structural ceramic products until 1979.  In 1979, the main production activity moved from L'Hospitalet de Llobregat to the new facilities in Esparreguera (Barcelona).  This new development in 1979 was the start of CERAMICA COLLET and its brand SIO-2 as leader in the manufacture of red ceramic bodies for pottery in Spain.   The first product was 2 kg of red clay in heat shrink packaging.  Today, every standard product is manufactured in food-grade heat-shrinked packaging.  Ceramica Collet started exporting from Spain in 1984.

In 1992 additional investments in new facilities and human resources with the aim of reinforcing both the leadership position in Spain and the exporting activity, which was mainly focused on the European countries.

Additional expansions and developments were made over the following decade and the first robot was installed to automated stacking of finished clay on pallets for shipping.

In 2011, the company invested in improved automation in the LA2 product line, for production of special and grogged products.  In 2012, the control of the milling process M1 is automated and Barry, a new palletizing robot is installed.

In 2013, a new program for Barry the robot, capable of palletize any kind of format and packaging, is developed. The outside of the factory is paved and new gardens are built.  A new ventilation system inside the factory is installed to guarantee the total removal of air-borne dust.

In 2014, a new digital cutter machine for industrial packing is installed to increase productivity and limit deviations in the weight of manufacture products.

In 2015, the STUDIO SIO-2 is inaugurated. Beside the laboratory for product research, development and quality control, is a new space for sharing knowledge in artistic ceramics.

In 2016, the company COLLET CLAYS Corp., affiliated to Ceramica Collet SA, is created for the import and distribution of SIO-2 Ceramic Bodies in the United States.
